Yes it is a tax, a vehicle tax. Just like petrol 'duty', alcohol 'duty', tobacco 'duty' are all taxes.

I'd happily pay 'road tax' if it was ring-fenced to pay for the upkeep of the roads but the money raised from V.E.D. isn't.

We will be paying 'road tax' before long when they fit black-boxes to all our cars/bikes and charge us £ per mile, with premium rates for 'peak times' which will no doubt be 7am-11am and 3pm-7pm, as well as sell the data to whoever wants it - no doubt that won't pay for the roads either :violence-smack:

Very little of HM Treasury income is ring fenced in terms of what it can be spent on. It just goes into a general pot to be spent on things that absolutely must be paid for, (and things the Govt hope could be vote winners next time around).
Road tax is no more for raising money for roads than insurance tax is for helping us buy more insurance, or tampon tax was aimed at helping women buy the products they need at a certain time of the month...

Since the Government has a monopoly on violence - you have to pay.
And because we have a corrupt two-party first past the post electoral system (which we voted for), you're going to have to continue giving them what you thought was yours.

My council tax bill landed too. Not cheap, but I understand councils are over a barrel as central govt funding keeps getting cut, and yet councils are legally obliged to provide various services.
My beef is this year the bill was divided up into ten instalments not the usual 12 I've paid the past few years, so I've had to ask them to redo the maths on 12 payments...
(It prolongs the agony but is a bit less pain on a month by month basis).

Mine has always been 10.

I prefer it that way as I get February and March off.

2112  £3200.  Is that due to low population density??
Mine is 10 payments for £1330 p.a. with single person discount.

Not a scooby doo, it's always been a bit high but the last few years it's rocketed up. Band 'F' as it happens based on values from about 20 years ago. I have seen talk that council tax could become based on your energy efficiency to encourage people to have more efficient homes. Bring that on ASAP as I'm an 'A'.

£1360 here in the post apocalyptic wasteland of Port Talbot.

Though, take a stroll through the town centre on on a weekday morning and it's more like a scene from the walking dead.  lol

P.S, I'm not from round here!

The clocks went forward last night as a signal that the seasons are changing and winter is in the past. How do I know? Because today it is overcast with thick white cloud, much colder than yesterday with the promise of colder weather for next 10 days or so.   ### ### ###
