I've just had an email from Holiday Safe Insurance saying "Your holiday insurance is about to expire". What a bloody wind up!

Seen the Taylor's coffee bags advert? "Why didn't somebody think of it before"? "
That really bugs me. Because somebody did.
Am I the only one who remembers Lyons coffee bags in the 1970s?

Bloody horrible. Which is why they were short-lived, I expect.
Won't be trying Taylor's, either.

One of the lads at work has a Senseo coffee machine dooberry and that uses coffee in teabag type pads. Gives a nice brew out too.

God awful stuff. Only tried it once but it was enough. I'd sooner drink J.W. Lees beer...

I don't mind it in some cold milk: not sure I'd want to drink it instead of coffee though.

Here's a thing.

The news today is going on about The fashion industry being afraid that it will be 'totally decimated' by the pandemic.

Now, I totally understand the spirit of the statement, but it pisses me off that the BBC, who paraphrase all of the time on the news makes absolutely no effort to correct the statement.

So, the fashion industry is afraid that they will lose 10% of their industry... If that's what they really mean then that's doing a damn sight better than most industries in this shitstorm and they should STFU.

How difficult would it have been to say 'devastated' instead?  ###

Nerd alert...

To be fair, sources like OED now define 'decimate' as meaning 'destroy a large proportion of' as well as mentioning the pretty much redundant historical origin of the word. So could be greater than 10% of the industry gone... It's OK that meanings evolve over the ages (I love it that the Flintstones song mentioned having a 'gay old time'. Yabba dabba doo!

If you want to get frothed up about wrong words, join me with moaning about the improper use of the word 'meteoric' instead.
A successful person is often described as having had a 'meteoric rise' (I.e. to the top of their field), whereas we all know really that meteors fall down into the atmosphere crashing and burning all the while....

They say the meaning of words changes with time. However the OED seems to be committed to bowing down to Vox Pop too eagerly. I would prefer it if the OED defended the language rather than assist with it's reduction.   The adoption of American street slang is a major assualt on the common understanding of English.

I used to feel the same. When you see the French trying to keep their language (and even personal names) pure from foreign corruption you can imagine how that language will decline and be confined to the past like latin. Adapt and survive, sadly.

But French is a foreign language... Much more of what was sense is consigned to history every day that the 'yoof of t'day' rely on some made up androgynous 'influencer' for their direction in life.
