You are so right about going back down a route looking different. In my b road meanderings I will sometimes pull up to a junction onto a more main road , still probably a b , look up it one way and think " no not a clue where I am " then look down other and go " ahh ..yes " . Because it is a road I only travel down not up .
But I get lost real easy . In towns or places I haven't visited I have taken to stopping as I go out of view of the bike parked up , turning around , and  spend a few seconds  ( or more if the fancy takes me ) looking  at it that way . If I just wander off it all looks unfamiliar trying to find my way back..
