I ordered a aftermarket exhaust for my Harley on the 8th September from eBay.
I paid the asking price including £33.85 postage as it was coming from Spain.
I have been getting email updates from the Seller and including parcel Delivery emails from UPS saying parcel has been shipped, and scheduled delivery 15/09/
With a 3 hour window, then this morning I get an email saying your delivery has been Rescheduled until Monday 18/09.
I then get a email saying I have to Pay fees and Taxes £69.76 it said pay now or pay the driver.
Just wondered if this was OK ? Or is this a possible scam

Pay the driver sounds like bollocks to me. Who was that email from? UPS or the seller?

I would check through UPS own website, using your tracking number, to see if it's genuine. Could well be you've been hit with duty, but paying the driver is a no-no with us, just seems open to too many possible 'misunderstandings '

I've just put your number into their system, looks like you've been hit with a legit charge. I'd still rather pay online than pay the driver, though.

I think you have to pay the VAT to the carrier ( + a charge from the carrier for collecting it).
For instance this is on the DPD site
"If the value of goods is greater than €150 (£135), the purchaser / recipient of your goods must pay any Local VAT prior to delivery. They will be contacted by the carrier to arrange payment"
Sorry if this sounds harsh but how did you think you were going to pay the VAT...

Thank you Rusty 👍 I will ring UPS tomorrow.

And endintears the seller made it sound like it was all included?
I am not worried about having to pay I just don’t want to be scammed.

Sellers often hide a little "local taxes may apply" on Ebay listings. My outfit pay these charges, whether it be VAT, import duty, whatever, then send a nice little silver/grey card telling the buyer how to pay the ransom. We never, ever handle doorstep payments, though.

I understand the anguish over hidden or local taxes issues. Imports from the US has always had this, going by friends who've imported from there. Brexit has brought about the same 'charges' but all legitamite as they are now individual rules between countries with no common (EU) financial agreement. Bravo Brexit!
So how's it going so far then?

Legitamite?

That the Breton version of Vegemite?

I nearly got shafted with some hefty import charges when I bought a set of bike jeans from a UK seller on eBay. They claimed to be in the UK but the jeans came from Italy, triggering a hefty import tax charge. I refused to pay, rejected the jeans and had to go to my card provider to get a refund, which they did promptly. I still get the odd letter from them asking me to pay for the import fee, but the tone has changed from threatening to begging... No longer an eBay seller either.
It's pronounced 'twenty-one-twelve'

I'm restoring an old Vespa and Germany was my go-to country for good quality parts that are not obtainable in the UK.
But the hefty additional costs involved in importing now give me even more excuse to park the scoot forgotten even further back in the garage...

EasyJet to Germany - may be cheaper!

A Harley owner told me that buying an aftermarket exhausts for a Harley is called "Harley tax". Nobody wants to pay it but everybody does.  :thumb:. Loud pipes save lives, they don't do much for ear drums though.  :)

Nice idea, but maybe not with the luggage charges!
I have considered a road trip/ holiday, but import charges are payable above a certain value of goods however they get into the country now unfortunately.  :icon_batterup:
