I'd probably be buying a C3 from them now if I was in the market for my next helmet. The Qwest will have to wear out first, but I must say that I am never buying another helmet unless it has an internal sun visor. Shoei needs to catch up with the rest of the manufacturers. I get that race helmets don't need them, but this is a touring helmet and I don't want to stop each time the weather/light conditions changes (and I don't wear sunglasses with a helmet.) I should have looked past how nice the Qwest fitted, how quiet it is and how well the vents work. Helmets only last me 1.5 to 2 years so at least I know I'm not going to keep it for 5

Snap, I wanted to get a C3 last yeasr, was only the price tag that put me off, Now I don't need another helmet (and the proce tag still puts me off as I havent a brass ha'penny)

Price is the thing that put me off as well, I don't mind spending a bit as I do a lot of miles. Over Â£300 is a bit much for some fibre glass, polystyrene, plastic and some padding. I bet they cost less than Â£100 to make, even the really good helmets.

totally agree.

I was erring toward the side of 'feck it' and nearly bought it, but as with anything I buy, I searched for some 1st hand feedback and there are downsides to the C3 which stopped me shelling out the Â£400+ at the time, and the fact I scratch visors like a good'one and they are ~Â£65 to replace.

I think the quietness (and the brand to be honest) were the selling points for me, but the helmet itself feels no better in hand than the Nolan I bought for under 1/2 the price.

I am on your page with the drop down sun visor too, I would have a mulitec in an instant if they would add this simple thing.

For what its worth, I got a C3 when they first came out because a few places had great discounts (don't know why) and throwing in freebies like helmet bags, Optimate 4 and other stuff, think I paid Â£299 or 309 at the time...about 4 or 5 times more than I'd paid for a lid before, but was feeling slightly flush, and really liked the fit and the quality...all the flips I tried suffered from creakiness, but this one to me felt more solid. I liked the fastening, internal visor optical qualities and the visor with pinlock was quality. I tend not to drop lids these days (oh-oh!) or scratch visors (goody-bloody two shoes I am!).

Biggest probs for me were :

1. insects getting in vent on top, dropping onto bald head, very itchy as they skate around wondering what the hell has happened! Took vent apart (easy) glued sliver of plastic mesh onto detachable vent cover - presto! BUT a Â£300 helmet shouldn't need that, for fks sake.

2. Getting it apart to put the Autocom speakers in was very scary - its got to be the awkwardest lid to do this to! However it was done, with no ill-effects (nurse had to swab me forehead every 10 seconds though!).

Now, I love it...I don't do Juvecu's miles and it last me years, hopefully (I know you're sposed to change 'em more than I actually do...)

My previous helmet was a Shark RSI Titan, it was very comfortable, but not very quiet and the vents didn't work well. I had that for 2 years before replacing it with the Shoei Qwest. It was only after I bought the Qwest that I realised how much the Shark had 'degraded' (for lack of a better word.) The high wear in all weathers had the effect that the helmet liner had lost it's plushness and the fit wasn't as good as it should be. The liner was starting to split around the cushion at the bottom that wraps around the neck, this was from the repeated times putting the helmet on and taking it off. It's only afterwards that it occurred to me that I should have replaced it sooner. I'm not sure how long the Shoei will last, it is certainly better made than the Shark, but that's not to say the Shark is mad badly at all, it isn't. I'm hoping the Shoei lasts me at least a year, I would be happy if it lasts 1.5 and smiling if it lasted 2.

I think I'm going to have to have a long hard think about the helmets I buy when it comes time to change the Qwest. I could buy cheaper helmets, but get a new one every year or I could buy more expensive helmets and wear them for 1.5 to 2 years. I just don't know which way to go, I'd love to have a a Qwest with the internal visor. I think the way the Shoei visors mount is overly engineered, it works well to make a great seal, but it's a pain changing the visor. I've changed visors a lot on the Qwest and I still have it that I have to stop again and clip it in properly again because it didn't catch right the first time. Something that annoys me endlessly is that I have to take the helmet and gloves off to change the visor as it has these tiny damn hooks that fit into equally tiny slots. Not to mention that each time I take the visor off I'm constantly concerned that I will brake these tiny hooks off. The Shark system is brilliant, I could change a visor in 20 seconds and that includes taking it out of the bag and putting the one I took off back into the bag, all that with no need to remove my helmet or my gloves. Unless Shoei come up with a Qwest that have an internal sun visor within the next year there's no chance I buy one when I change. I'm going to have to stop being a helmet snob and look at the 'lesser' brands with an open mind.

At Â£299 I would have had one for sure!

Is it the C3 that has to e sent to the manufacturer to change the cheek pads as they are on a riveted strap going to the back of the helmet? Not sure if it is, but I found that a rather odd idea!

Bencav, I might be wrong about the price - might have been 319 ? - can't remember now! I think your right about the pads, but there's prob a way rund it, makers always want stuff returned at the buyers cost!

Basically, Juvecu, if I was doing your miles, mate, I wouldn't buy the Schuberth at normal prices (or probably even sale/special offer deals) there is no, or not enough extra safety/protection factor in it to justify it. How about getting a lid that fits you well, with features you need at cheapest price and be prepared to chuck it if owt goes wrong, or buy another identical one then to use as spare parts? Maybe set a price where you would be happy and not worry about breaking one?

I went from Arai full face - past me test and all the kit was expensive, to Caberg Justismo's. Had three of them. Â£170 ish. 2nd one was one of a batch shipped with the anti-mist coating on the OUTSIDE of the visor rather than the inside. Was riding along the M62 near Castleford in heavy rush-hour traffic when it started raining. Holy crap! I couldn't see a thing! it was like my visor had turned into grease proof paper.

Got to the dealer a couple of days later and they said "oh yeh, that's a design fault, they've been recalled" :wtf: They have my name on their database why the feck they didn't contact me to say I was going to kill meself I have no idea!!!! but apart from that, Good dark inner visor. Great anti-mist coating (when on the inside) of the visor, but relatively expensive to swap out. Then tried a Tackachi in J&S - how bad could it be for Â£85? Inner visor so light it was useless, misted up on a summer's day in the height of summer. Noisy, cheap feeling with scratchy plasticy bits, difficult to open the flip, the flip stopped in an awkward place, the slide for the sun visor was a little awkward too, did I mention it was noisy? January sales, I treated myself to a C3 from Hein Gerik at Â£50 off (Â£450 I think) I know, I know, more money then sense, but I figured I'd not bought a justismo for 18mnths so I'd like saved Â£250, and wasted the Â£80 on the Tacki, so it wasn't really that expensive.

Holy cow I can't believe a flip could be so quiet! The inner visor is dark enough. Everything is quality and such a good fit - very warm. The pinlock I'm a little reserved on - it mists up just at the bottom near my nose (about the size of a 50p - not sure if they all do this.) but as the rest stays mist free, it's only a little distracting. The front vents don't seem to work at all. The top vent is fantastic. I can confirm I have experienced the insect flying in and walking around on me bounce incredibly annoying design flaw.

I now have to keep it for 3 years so the cost wears down.

I think you're probably right, Gassoon (do you hear that often?

) If I can find a cheaper brand that fits well, has comfy lining, is quiet enough, has double D-ring strap, has vents that work OK'ish and an internal visor with pinlock on the main visor I should probably get that instead of a more expensive helmet. I think the trouble is finding a cheaper helmet that does all that and still scores well in safety tests. Another thing that's important for me is the weight, something like the Caberg Justissimo is just too heavy, it's about 1800g, anything approaching 1500g is getting too heavy for me. I have to pay attention to little things that cause fatigue because of the stupid miles I have to do so noise, clear vision, weight, comfort and good ventilation are high up on the list when choosing a helmet. This probably means that I should generally stay away from flip fronts, but the C3 is known to be quiet and only 1430g (I think?) so the only one worth considering.

Unlike most people I think Arai helmets feel like they are made from cheap plastic, the lining is scratchy and the price is ridiculous (and I still think so after recently trying the Tour X3 and some fancy race model.)

Aye, that's what I mean about 'no extra protection' bit, you're right (those ratings hadn't come out when I got my lid), so it has to be for other reasons to justify getting one now, I feel; quality, quiteness, fit, features etc

BTW glider, the anti-insect-mod is very easy, the top of the vent unclips and with a bit of cutting up of a 'Poundland' plastic kitchen sieve (still haven't replaced that for the wife

) you get a nice curvy bit of mesh which glues in to the underside of the detached part, and stops the bugs. Easy to clean, nice blast of cool, bug-free air!

Juvecu - look patiently for the best C3 deal and go for it!

I have only ever used Shoei or BMW helmets.

I started with Shoei helmets when they had a quick buckle style connector, which I actually preferred. When I had my BMW bike I had a moment of weakness when in for a service and bought a system 3 or 4, that got run over by an 18 wheeler (don't ask), after that I went back to Shoei helmets.

I have tried Arai, but they don't fit the shape of my head. I've never tried a Schuberth. Shoei helmets just fit me great.

As I wear glasses all the time, it is no big deal for me to swap to my prescription sunglasses when it is sunny.

The flip up design I can take it or leave it. It is nice to flip up to hold a conversation or when you are at the petrol station, but the downside is the extra weight and looking a bit of a prat when it is flipped up.

I tried the c3 at helmet city and also the qwest I ended up buying the xr1100 from Shoei as it fitted better than the others and seemed quieter than the c3 I find changing the visor easy when conpared to the aria I had before which was very loud over 30mph
