Fixed my buffetting - 2002 Vee
« on: June 17, 2011, 10:18:35 »
First off, an apology:

For years on bike forums I've heard about "buffetting". My silent response has always been "It's called WIND you big softies - if you don't like it, get back in your car".

Until I picked up my Vee...

On the way home after collecting it, sat at 70mph, I suddenly realised I had a splitting headache and my vision was a bit blurry. Gantry signs over the motorway were almost unreadable. Not particularly noisy, just really painful.

So, turns out buffetting does exist, I'd just never had a bike that did it before. So, to all the bikers I've privately mocked over the years:  :text-imsorry:

Anyway, I've fixed the buffetting problem with the unusual choice of fitting an original screen on my 2002 Vee. It came with a Cee Baily vented touring screen which was giving me headaches.  I've just fitted a powerbronze copy of the original screen (as supplied by Wemoto) and all is well again.

There is more wind noise with the smaller screen, but it's much "cleaner" air - no booming and no headaches.

I think it just goes to show that this sort of problem is very personal - height, weight, screen, riding style, crash helmet, and (I reckon) the resonant frequency of your brain/eyeballs!

The good news is that (once I get chance to give it a clean) there will be a Cee Bailey vented touring screen to sell on to another Vee owner who is probably getting blinding headaches from the standard screen.

Hope you didn't pay for that screen....I've just binned a Vee '02 screen as no one took it despite being offered for free on the board....

Couldn't agree more with this .. I was quite happy with my standard screen on my 53 Vee since I got it a year ago but watched for ages the varying opinions on screens and convinced myself a mra vario was the way forward  ... bought it, fitted it and took it straight off again  ... the vario pushed the wind straight into my lid regardless of where the spoiler was and I too got those splitting headaches .. the original screen pushes it to just below your shoulders so it's not quiet but it is clean ... Juvecu and I had this conversation at Oxford services last week ..
So in the case of earlier models perhaps standard is best !
I'm sure depending on height and build that it will work for some so if anyone wants to make me an offer for an MRA Vario for a K2 ................

Changed mine for an MRA vario too ... got the tall one ... too tall and ended up cutting 1 1/4" off the top with the jigsaw and moving the holes down one pitch for the spoiler thingy. I agree it doesn't seem to do that much but I find it is better than the original screen in any position.

The problem I think I have is my liking for flip front lids, they are noisier by definition as they have an additional join which upsets the wind flow and exacerbates the buffeting .....

Going to try those made to measure ear blocker things a go as the foam pellets just ping out when they expand in my ears, they work but give me ear ache as I have to stuff them so far in ... I think they are soaking up my brain juices or is it old age  :old:  they are in so far.
My mum found out she had shallow ears when she went for a hearing aid so I think I have inherited it from her.

Every ones different , would be a boring old world if we weren't I suppose.

I'm using these earplugs at the moment, and can recommend them:

I can still listen to music through my Bluetooth Caberg lid, but takes most of the wind noise away.

I used to use those but gave up on them, they kept coming out of my ears after about 25 mins  :angry-tappingfoot: just use laser lites now, which until I'd got used to my alpines had seemed far too effective but now I'm happy with them

I used to have the Laser Lites, always struggled a bit to get them in. Now I use the Bilsom 303L plugs, love them and buy them in boxes of 200 pairs individually packaged. I've been handing them out to people and it seems everyone that tries them likes them. Give them a try when your Laser Lites run out :thumb:
