Helmet visors...
« on: January 10, 2011, 04:22:00 »
Hello...
let me give you a clue, as to what I am after, or trying to acheive...

I have a Shark s900 Glow, in white, and as you can guess... I am after a new Visor...
I have gone into the complex maze, that is the inter-web... and I am sure part of me is still in there, trying fretfully to get out...

I have an Interior visor, which comes as standard on the helmet... but is also as much use, as a fart, in a wind-storm... you can drop it down, and ride at night with it.. that is how shit it is...

... and my outter visor, is slowly dying a death... the tabs at the side of the helmet visor, that stop it from opening to far... have snapped off... and it was/is supposedly a fog-free treated one, less than a year old... but I do A HELL OF A LOT of mileage... so I need a new one...

Here is the question...

Pinlocks...

Are they any good? I have heard differing replies to this one... some say that they swear by them... and others say, that they have nothing but distortion, rainbowing and shine... and have hence binned them, and gone back to their old ones... which isn't really a thing I want to do, as a Iridium Blue visor, with pinlock... will cost me about £62, plus p+p...

What I am after, ideally, is a Iridium Blue Outter Visor, with a clear internal Pinlock insert...
... and keep my slowly dying clear one, as a spare, or take it with me, incase I have to run in the dark... which is more a certainty, than a what if...

Anybody any thoughts, or dealings on this point?

despite it not fitting perfectly and it fogging up between the insert and the visor, I'm finding my pinlock insert infinitely better than the two previous self-adhesive fog city inserts (HJC IS-16 helmet) - it does a better job of fighting misting and the visibility is also miles better.

I've not seen any rainbowing or shine through mine

I bought my pinlock insert from these blokes: http://www.racevisors.co.uk/

both my Nolan helmets have pinlock and I wouldn't go back to a normal visor, the pinlocks don't steam and remain clear in all conditions,my N85 has an internal slide down sun visor which is very good too.

Hmmmmm...
So you blokes are saying "Yes" to me getting a Pinlock'd Visor from RaceVisors (this is where I was looking, too...) then?
What downsides, if any do you find?
My Strom, is my only means of transport, and I use it 24/7, 365... so I need it (visor) to be of top quality, and be able to see what I am doing, and where I am going... rain, snow, hail, sleet, spray, cold hot, humid etc etc... and knowing the UK weather... all of that, will happen in one day... on the way to a job... lol

Pinlocked Blue Iridium visor, for Shark S900... is clocking in at £61.... (give or take a penny or two...)
What would be a better idea?
Clear visor, with pinlock, and a possible Pinlock tint... although not in Iridium, I notice...
or...
Blue Iridium Visor, with Pinlock, and carry my old clear one, for night runs?

Like I say... I can run with the internal sun-shield down, at night... and STILL see where the hell I am going... it is that good...

I also notice that there is a Polarized Pinlock thing.... but I cannot find it for my helmet...
could / would I be able to run a clear visor, and polarized dark tint Pinlock... as opposed to a Blue Iridium.. with clear pinlock?
What are your thoughts? There isn't much in it, either way.... just about a £10 difference, from Basic Pinlock (clear/clear) to Futuristic (Iridium / clear)....

I might be tempted to, if I felt totally nuts, to run with a Iridium AND the tinted Pinlock... lol
(just call me Ray Charles... I will be able to tell where I am going, by the cats-eyes... lol)

I use my bike just about every day of the year too (anything to avoid travelling by train).

I can't really comment on the best combination, you might want to get a couple for different conditions as they're super pretty easy fit and remove although probably not whilst out and about (2 visors with different inserts might be easier)

I just run a clear visor, with a clear pinlock insert and drop the internal sun visor on my is-16 for the sunnier days. It's not perfect in mega sunny conditions, but we don't get too many of those in Leeds
