Schuberth C3
« on: September 12, 2010, 14:15:44 »
I am seriously considering getting one of these to replace my Caberg Flip Front. I have heard good things (and the odd jibe about it being an old man's hat, but balls to that).

Before I drop £450 on a hat, who has tried one and what are the real world views on it??

If I had £700 I would get the carbon one. Ho hum..

I have a BMW System 4 Helmet which is made by Schuberth. It's light, comfortable and fairly quiet with good visibility.
Spare parts are quite dear - new visor was £60, I expect the Schuberths will be similar - this website compares them.

http://micapeak.com/BMW/gs/syst3.html

Of course the later Schuberths are likely to be better equipped.

They are not as low profile with the flip up and can catch the wind ,especially if
you ride with the lid flipped most of the time, nice and quiet when down though.

isn't it illegal to ride with it flipped up?

I was looking at getting a flip front, the Sintesi is an example of this type of lid.
If you have one of the Caberg flip fronts lids that lock up you can ride with it up.  Apperently it has to lock in the up position to be legal.

I've got a C3 , got it when they first came out (Helmetcity) as an introductory offer they were cheaper then.
Biggest problem has been fitting autocom into it...though not as difficult as into the wifes bloody C2!
Some riders report that different helmets have differing properties when on a strom (turbulence etc) and I suspect the C3 is one which doesn't go so well with the Stroms turbulence issues (I keep meaning to try out my old lid as a cmparison...) In clean air the C3 is good for a flip, however. The good points: pretty quiet, comfortable (but depends on shape of Your heed! ...see Webbike world reports) the mechanism seems solid enough, pinlock is great - a revelation! The sun visor works well, too, no distortion, but needs cleaning gently before every time you go out.
Just remembered another problem, because of the way the vents on top are routed, dead flies (and alive ones!) get dumped occasionally onto the top of your head in summer! Not nice, the worst I've had for this, ever. I fixed it by gluing a piece of cut-up plastic filter/gauze into the vent - but this shouldn't be needed on a 400 quid helmet!
Also, I haven't found a way of adjusting the clear visor so its a snug fit to the visor port seal - the C2 is better for this - and I've had some water getting in. Also, Schuberth have never once replied to my email q's (and I read other disgruntled ownes say the same!) . Just being as honest as I can be, mate!
In summary, I  would say today there are other lids out there better value, and prob at least as good (and more cheaply bluetooth enabled/upgradeable, too!)

Thanks blokes for all your replies.

I have been reading that the build quality is not great, but the reviews were all from the first run. I would expect a work of art signed by God himself for £450 knicker!

I currently have a Caberg Trip flip front and find them really useful (the flip), especially as most petrol stations demand you take them off, so I think I want to continue with the flip front design. My earplugs are the moulded ones and so noise isn't a huge issue.

I am off on Wednesday to test drive a bike and know that they are a Schuberth dealer, so will try it all out for size etc. It's good to hear what real users think though.

I have a C3, and a Shoei Hornet DS and a Shoei syncrotec and a Shoei Multitec and a BMW series 4 and an AGV stealth,  pretty sure I've got an Arai somethingorother too!   :shy:

My everyday lid is the C3.  Its quiet, light and quite airy.  I do like it.  The biggest draw back for me is the outer visor.  If I ride with the flip down, sun visor down and then the clear outer visor up, when I do any more than 30 or 40mph the clear visor slips down.  Its like the ratchet isn't strong enough to hold it.  Its only a minor niggle but like you say for £400+ you expect perfection. :GRR:

I love the Mulitec more than the syncrotech,  its just a bit more comfy a bit lighter and a bit nicer to put my head in.  The DS is plush but I do like a flip front lid.  I find then more user friendly at petrol station and shops and stuff.  Also the peek visor on the DS is entirly pointless, its not long enough to keep the sun out of my eyes and it does nothing to keep the rain off either.  :rain:

The BMW, well I had a series 2 and it lasted a week before it fell apart, I had a series 3 which lasted about 6 months before it fell apart.  The series 4 is OK, definatly better than the other 2 so I hope the series 5 is much better, even more so as the C3 and BMW S5 are made by the same people.

The best lid for you is the one that suits you and fits you the best.  never compromise on your lid cos you only get one head and you'll be sticking your head in it as often as possible

Got enough helmets??

On a video I watched regarding the C3 there is a setting for city riding that they mention but then skimmed over. Is it a little pin or something that keeps it open a crack?? Is this the bit that doesn't work??

don't know!  I never read instruction books!!

If it has a locking pin for the clear visior to keep it up I've never found it.  I've owned it for nearly a year,  I think I'll go give it a prodnapoke to see if I've missed anything!!

Nope, nothing.

I've prodded and poked it, pulled bits and wiggled other bits but nothing locks the visor up, other than its half arse ratchet thingy!

Andy knows how this works, I recall him mentioning it somewhere. I think you pulled it forward or something like that.

The new HJC 7-in-1 lid looks funky though!

Police riders are always riding with thier flips up in and around London.
And I've never been pulled for it and that includes 10 hours a day 5 days a week when I were a courier.
