Frank Thomas Textile Jackets
« on: September 11, 2010, 18:53:45 »
Does anybody have any experience of a couple of these jackets? I'm looking at either the X Terrain or the Xtreme Tour. They seem to be a good spec for the money. Otherwise, any other recommendations are welcome in a similar price band. Thanks in advance.

There aren't any prices showing on the Frank Thomas website and I'm too lazy to go looking, what's the price range you're looking at for the jacket & trousers?

George White have the Xtreme Tour jacket for 100 quid, and I can get the X Terrain locally for about £150ish. Don't really want to spend much more. Not looking for troosers. I've also seen they've got the Caberg Justissimo for £100. Seems a bargain!

I went to George Whites last Sunday, was very pissed off because they had almost nothing in my size (large.) Most of the Frank Thomas stuff looks decent and I think I ended up with the Xtreme Tour jacket in my hand, but didn't buy it because I couldn't find trousers that fit properly.

I've since been looking at the Richa stuff, managed to find a shop that had the Torrent jacket in stock, looks better quality than the Frank Thomas stuff. The retail price for the Torrent jacket is ~£110. They also sell an Adventure jacket which they didn't have in stock, the difference is that it uses a thicker outer shell and it has lots of zipped air vents compared to the Torrent jacket. The retail price for the Adventure jacket is ~£150.

The sizing for the Richa stuff is good too, they only had the Torrent in a medium and extra large, the medium was just too tight and the XL was just too loose, I'm normally a large (well, after my wife moved to the UK and started feeding me properly  lol ) The Frank Thomas sizing was odd, one range I would need a medium, the next a large and then an XL on some others, it was annoying.

I'm deciding which Richa gear I want and then I might just order it without trying it one for size again.

Hope that helps  :thumb:

Thanks for that. I'm over there in a few weeks time with family and car; I'll try to get to some big shops and see what's available.

Frank Thomas gear has an excellent reputation and my brother and mate have Frank Thomas gear and are very happy with it. To get better you will need to spend some serious coin

I have owned one FT jacket it leaked,I had a pair of waterproof boots they leaked, loverly lady at FT replaced them with a more expensive pair which also leaked, brother had a pair of gloves, yep, leaked too.at which point I looked elsewhere,HG expensive but dry and very crash proof as I found out 20 minutes after I brought a new jacket, you pays Your money as they say.

Thanks all, still no further decided! I reckon they can't be any worse than my 8 year old Spada jacket so I'll go to the dealer and decide on the day. I still really like the look of the F T jacket so we'll see. Any opinions on the Caberg helmet for that price? It's about £40 cheaper than locally without VAT!!! My wifee needs a new lid as well.

Hi Folks, I'm back and didn't buy anything!
George Whites Outlet didn't have anything in my size, so I guess I'll stick with my old gear a little longer...

For what its worth smithy, I've got 2 FT jackets, got em cheap at a BMF show, and they haven't leaked so far, but mine aren't very breathable - Once, on a hot day at a filling station in holland I poured 2 pints of condensation and sweat out of my sleeve! Maybe the newer stuff is better...I'm looking at HG for a decent goretex jacket for next year...

I did like the caberg justissimo helmet, but found it extremely noisy. I reccomend ear plugs at all times :)

Yeah, I wondered about noise as the Trip is quite noisy. Still, nothing going to happen this year as regards new gear. Thanks to you all anyway.
I will look again in the Spring for a new 'quiet, comfortable, cheapish, flip-front' helmet, and an 'all-seasons, comfortable, stylish (!), all-terrain' jacket!
Love to you all!

I have come to the conclusion that if you want a flip front helmet then noise is the price you have to pay. I've been wearing earplugs so long I feel uncomfortable without them now anyway.

have you tried the new caberg Konda? my dealer said its replaced the trip and the sintesi replaced the justissimo gt.

I was not happy with the konda. felt way to close to my nose and chin. had a good look at the seals and not that impressed either. I must add, while the dealer wasn't looking, I gave it a slight squeeze in my hands, nothing major, but the helmet had alot of give in it. I decided their and then no way for me.

I havnt tried the sintesi though. for £100 more, I hope its a better lid
