A few days in Yorkshire.
« on: July 24, 2025, 14:13:22 »
Deb & myself had a great few days in Yorkshire. Paul was our guide & we were joined for the two days riding by Neil.
Looking at the weather forecast it would have been easy to call the trip off, but in for a penny & all that ......
The ride up on Sunday for Deb & me was a little moist! It started raining 15 minutes from home & never stopped until late on Sunday night. Some of it was the heaviest rain we’ve ever ridden in & on the motorway/dual carriageway wasn’t pleasant, but we made it to our B&B where the bar was dry & only the beer was wet.  :thumb:
On Monday we met Paul & Neil & headed north then west as far as Masham, stopping a few times for refreshments during the ride.
Tuesday we headed east to Whitby, then Scarborough (where a little ride around Olivers Mount  is compulsory) before heading back inland. A few refreshment stops were also included today.
The forecast for Mon & Tues was still possible rain with some heavy thundery showers & after Sunday’s soaking we weren’t too hopeful, but we got lucky. The temperatures were in the high teens, occasionally getting into the 20’s & sunny for the most. The two heavy downpours that we did get, one Monday, one Tuesday, happened when we were in cafes.
Thanks to Paul for the routes & thanks to Neil for joining us.

A few photos to prove it happened.  :thumb:

A quick video clip from Monday's ride.
I love farmers & I've got all the time in the world for them ..........
except when they try to kill me (& Deb)!  :icon_batterup:
He had no idea what was in front of him. You can see his head appear, to see what all the horn sounding was about, from behind the right hand feeder trough, around 47/48 seconds.  lol

A few weeks ago on a quiet and staight country road just south of the A69 my view of the road was interrupted by a large black plastic thing being propelled by a tractor / fork lift from a gateway. The single front disc on the V7 demonstrated it's weakness and the rear brake ABS was tested to the limit while the very puny horn was operated to almost no effect (note I must sort that out soon).  Hell that was close. The bale of whatever was way over the middle of the road when it stopped. Anything coming the other way would have hit it or more like swerved to miss it and hit me head on. I thought 40 was slow enough, but when stuff happens, it can be sudden and out of the blue.

What horn upgrade ? Denali sound bomb ?

I'm thinking the same thing Dave. The horn on the 800 is far better than the one on the 650. I've only tried it a few times to test it & as I very rarely find the need to use it (except for instances like this, when I thought it seemed inadequate  :) ) I wasn't going to bother upgrading, I might now!

The Denali Soundbomb Mini is supposed to be freakin loud, but won't need any faffing with wiring. It's advertised as a direct OEM replacement.

They had all of them set up at ABR to test and the Mini is definitely very loud.
Honestly the full Sound Bomb is a bit obnoxious, funny and great in a real emergency but I'd genuinely feel bad using it at any other time. If I pressed it by accident whilst indicating, I think I would probably crash all on my own :)
The mini should run off standard wiring and is of course much easier to find space for on a minimalist bike.

I have the full fat Denali Soundbomb. I apologise in advance to the MOT tester when he says 'sound the horn'.
Last time he commented: "F**k me, that's loud!"

When a beast is bearing down on us we need a big "wake up" sound. We have no protection to save us and must rely on 'scare tactics'. I will take a serious look at the sound bomb. Note:- The Tractor driver was wearing ear defenders and so would I if I did their job.

I agree, Rixington, it is obnoxiously loud. An interesting side effect of that is that I tend to use it less than a standard one. But it's there for those occasions when absolutely needed.

Seems to have been a good outing despite the rain. A pity I couldn't have nipped up to join you all.

Dave, the ear defenders are a must in such conditions, but just as important, maybe more so, is that you can see where you're going & look where you're going.

I'm a Soundbomb Mini fan.
Had one on the Pan and now on the STrom.
They're as loud as you need.

Very enjoyable couple of days so thanks to Paul Mick & Deb for the invite and the good company.
An extra big thank you to Paul for the routes, leading us and also ensuring that when rain threatened by putting his waterproofs on the sun came out instead  :)

For those of you who Motocamp I camped at the Castle Howard lakeside site close to Malton on the Monday night.
So yes my experience was limited as I arrived latish and left early but worth a look if you are visiting the area.
