Looking for a quieter lid
« on: May 23, 2017, 21:06:24 »
I'm looking to change my helmet. Currently have a particularly noisy one I got when I started biking a few years ago as a job lot of bike clothing...can't even remember the name!

I know the Shuberth or Shoei are the gold standard, but they are a bit out of my price range.

I've looked at a few on sportsbike shop and checked their reviews on billys crash helmets.

There are a few so bear with me! I'd appreciate feedback from anyone with experience with these? I drive a Glee by the way.

https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/97697

Great price.
Review says it is great for upright rising position and good for buffeting
https://billyscrashhelmets.co.uk/review-scorpion-exo-500-air-full-face-helmet/

or:
https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/107994

Review states good for upright position as well
https://billyscrashhelmets.co.uk/sharp-speed-r-helmet-review/

Or

https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/258025

Review has this as quiet as well
https://billyscrashhelmets.co.uk/review-sharp-5-star-safety-rated-hjc-fg-st-full-face-motorcycle-crash-helmet/

Any advice will be gratefully received! (Or indeed any recommendations around this £150 price point).

Thanks a lot!

Hi, I also ride a glee and used to have an HJC IS17.  Good quality helmet for the price but found it very noisy. I'm not 100% sure what caused the noise but I thought it was caused by the large air vent and the sun visor mech on the top of the helmet.  I now have a Scorpion exo 2000 which is fantastic.  It's pretty quiet although I always wear ear plugs and very comfortable .  Sports bike shop do free returns so I would order a few and chose that fits the best.

HJC IS17 is dead quiet when compared to BOX BX1, until you open top vent, then it likes to whistle.

Whatever you choose, wear earplugs anyway. Tinnitus is an unchangeable burden.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

+1 to the earplugs - I use Isolate and find them to be superb

Interesting, I was looking at those, worth it then?

As for kids, I went from a HJC IS-17 at £130 to a Shoei GT-Air at £300 and there's no discernible difference, both too noisy for long journeys without earplugs.

I wouldn't bother with an expensive or new lid just for the quiet, just get some earplugs instead.

I have used www.helmetcity.co.uk/ a few times for lids and found their service to be excellant.

I use a Shark vision R and found it to be quite quiet then ruined it by putting a bluetooth intercom on the side which increased noise, but at least I've got music and coms... still wear ear plugs now and again though.

Paul - yes, they are very good indeed - the first time out it was a bit unreal because you can't really hear the wind but you could feel it - I've still got 5,000 rhubarb and custard types which I will use when sleeping after night shifts because I don't think the ally ones would be too comfy if you sleep on your side!

I needed a lid quickly when my C3 pro gave me headaches just before a long biking holiday (route 66) and bought a Givi HPS x.08 Flip front. It is relatively quiet and comfortable for a budget helmet. I have since bought a Schuberth C4 which is very quiet. Givi lid is now on eBay.

This website looks like a great resource. I'm planning on getting a new lid this weekend, so will probably use this to make a decision once I've whittled down a short-list based on comfort/fit. Thanks! :thumb:

Tinnitus is an unchangeable burden.

I can vouch for that!

I don't think there can be one definitive guide to a helmet noise. Everybody's head is a different shape, each different bike model deflects wind differently, and your seating position can change things.

I went from an Airoh to an AGV (with an integrated sun visor) and found the AGV to be louder. I then added extra foam (memory foam) to some internal parts which made it better. I then rode my mates VFR800 and found the AGV to be very quiet when on there compared to how my Airoh was.

On my Wee I find it essential to wear a snood. This massively cuts down on the wind that can rush up into the lid. I should probably buy a wind jammer but I don't like the look of it.

I always wear ear plugs now but still find it too noisy at times, this is because of the damage caused through not wearing ear plugs in the past. :icon_no:

Windjammer   - tried one, was so tight I could hardly get the helmet on...then couldn't get it off! Got some odd looks on the bus and in the swimming pool . They are a very, very tight fit, be warned. Also no good for flip up lids which tend, generally, to be noisier than a standard full face.

are these really that good? I've been using wax plugs I buy in the chemists I think they come around a dozen to the box, I'd upgrade to these though if I thought they were so much better, I'd imagine it would be a good idea to change the foam tip regularly.

Until someone (are you listening RIDE magazine) does proper scientific testing on helmets and screens, anything anyone tells you is just their opinion.  Few of us are going to admit something we just spent £300+ on is rubbish.  I usually change helmets every four or five years so never get to try a side by side comparison of more than two helmets.  Ear plugs and comfy helmet until someone does a proper test
