Anyone use Motocross/Adventure type helmets?
« on: December 23, 2016, 16:38:37 »
Been thinking of getting one as it will help with the low sun and also keep the visor clean (hopefully), but don't want to look like a wally. Knew a chappie who rode a Tiger 1050 use one and he was retired so not a spring chicken.

If it helps with the low sun and also helps keep the visor clean why worry about what you look like?  If you want one, you have one ma mate!

I love my X Lite X551 so much I have bought another. I also have an Arai Tour X. The X Lite has a built in drop-down visor which is really handy in Summer.

I use a Shoei Hornet, not too noisy and very lightweight, keeps the Sun off unless very low in sky. Not so sure about keeping the visor clean though.
Usually ride with visor up as have nice calm air behind the Puig screen :)

I don't care re image etc, it's all about long distance comfort for me, but I'm an old git and set in my ways

I use one for green laning,  an acerbis, and ocasionaly on the strom, some have distortion of vision through the visor, but reviews will highlight if it affects your selected brand.

Had one years back, useless for green laneing as the visor misted up very quickly, and wasn't much better on the road for the same reasons. Probably fine if you're using it in the warmer months though.

I do use moto x helmet in summer,  but use it with googles and a quick strap set up.

No misting if you use a correctly fitted pinlock

I've been wearing Dual Sport Lids for years. (Dual Sport -they look like an MX lid but have a visor)

I'm currently wearing an Spada Intrepid lid. Quick release mechanism, internal sun visor and the peak does help with the sun.

They do catch the side wind but I've ridden the Mrs' GSX quite fast and the thing only trys to pull your head off if you try to look up at the sky. They will try and twist your head off in very strong side winds if you like to still ride in 50mpg gusts.

I like these sort of lids a lot and my next lid will be one too.

I have the Airoh, in the same colour as shown.

I use to use it just for ADV touring on my DRZ. Have tried green laning in it but there isn't enough dust protection for my liking so I went back to googles.
Next year I'm going to try wearing it (with the peak fitted) on my V-strom, now I have a screen set up that seems to work, as you said, it would be great being able to block out the sun when it's low in the sky.

The visor is good and does not distort the image like some do. The peak is a good shape too, and not as large as some others so should catch less wind. It also sits low so if it does catch the wind you can just angle your head down a little and it then splits the air without dragging your head upwards.

I have used it in the street mode on the wee (without the peak) as it comes with the conversion kit.

Only negative I have is it has no internal sun visor but nowadays I tend to take sun glasses (with shortened arms - snapped off) and they work pretty good.
If I were to buy one again I might try the Spada (as it's cheap on fleabay) and has the integral sun visor but there nothing really wrong with the Airoh.

To keep the sun from dazzling me when it is low in the sky,on each helmet ( full face) I have bought for a very long time, I have always stuck two strips of black insulation tape across the visor.

I put it across the full width of the visor, right at the top. When the sun is low you just have to angle your head a few degrees lower. I find it helps a lot with preventing the dazzle. Not as good as a peak, but better than nothing.

I do not find the two strips restrict my view when the sun is not dazzling. Try it, it is very cheap and easy. If you don't like it - take it off, all it has cost you is a bit of tape.

Malfos, I do that. I have a strip of insulation tape across the top of the visor but I thought maybe a bit of shade would be nice. I also like the chin which gives you more room for breathing. Although I have a pinlock insert, I find my glasses still steam up when stationary or moving slowly. I leave a little gap in the visor but rain gets in through the gap at the top.

I have both the Airoh and the Spada one mentioned in the thread, the Spada is a far far better helmet IMO as it is more comfortable feels better made, I love the click down shade and the styling is better too. I have Arai's for my other bikes and the Spada feels almost as good on as them.

Big downer of the Airoh is the front has venting that cannot be closed so when it rains etc it comes straight through into your face had to tape mine over

fwiw. I have a Arai tour x3, but find it very, very noisy and I get misting up even with the pinlock fitted. heading back to the brand I started with and getting an AGV k5-s (I don't need a adv style lid),
