michellin pilot road4 trail
« on: November 04, 2016, 10:45:27 »
Fitted a set and have now done 300 mile. Massive difference to how the bike feels on the road, I had the standard tyres [bridgestone] on for 9000mile. For the first 6000mile they were OK, but the last 3000mile was horrible especially in the wet. They still had plenty of miles left in them but the feel was awfull. The bike is transformed with these PR4s fitted.

Recently put a full set of these on too based on feedback from here.  Seem good so far.  Got a little short of 13k from my stock front tyre.

I'll be looking at these to for my Veek once I wear out the disappointing Bridgestone a40's I have on at the mo.

I just fitted same set  too. Never liked Bridgestones and got rid of them at 6.6k miles. It makes a massive difference. It did cost me £245 with fitting and balancing wheels.

Fantastic tyre with excellent grip dry or wet but only on good tarmac. On a ride out I quickly noticed they were not so good on the loose or gravelly stuff and noticed that when riding across a field to my camp site on grass/mud  well... Bambi on ice lol
Great for road use but any hint of other use  :icon_no:

You folks got an update on the Pilot R4's.?
I'm going to be sticking to the tarmac so these look ideal.
I'm busy looking for some now, anyone seen any 'attractive deals' out there.

Just at the point of replacing my rear PR4 Trail. Its done 6500 and is already tickling the wear strips (front good for thousands yet). Great tyre but disappointing wear rate. Going to try the non trail version when I replace it.

Had some good info from Michelin re suitable tyres for my Glee, including..
Michelin Certified dealers offering a £30 Michelin fitting discount on Pilot Road 4 tyres during February and March (I guess that's for a pair but haven't checked).
The other interesting thing he mentioned was..
"As the Pilot Road 4 Trail tyres are designed to be run as a matching pair and use a different construction we recommend that they are not mixed with the standard Pilot Road 4 tyres.  While there is no legal restriction on their use, and they are broadly speaking an appropriate fitment it is not recommended by Michelin and this is the advice that we would also give to police, courts, accident investigators and insurance companies etc".

I can't really imagine a claim being thrown out for that but you never know these days.

I hope their website makes that clear...!

I'm not convinced that if they were legal it would be an issue. Like putting a Michelin rear with say a Bridgestone front, not illegal...

Nah, I'm with you. As long as each individual tyre is legal there's no issue. I could imagine some cheapskate might try and use it to wriggle out of their responsibilities, but it'd be laughed out of any court.
Reminds me of those 'don't mix cross-ply and radials' adds from way back when.!

Have been using PR3s then 4s on a CBF1000 and Triumph Explorer for several years.  Have to say wet grip is superb but the 4s ride a little harsh compared to the 3.  Had MCT Suspension rework the suspension on TEX to soften damping but was still not 100% happy with back end.  MCT asked what tyres and when I said PR4 they immediately recommended lowering rear pressure from 42 to 38/39 - result vast improvement !
Currently happy with Tourance on Strom which is generally only used for commute (25 mile each way) but soon will have to make that choice.  Not much feedback on Avons Trailrider on here - any thoughts?

Hi, I have trail riders on my 1200 Tenere, and personally I don't like them. Well, I don't like the front, it feels as though the front tyre is flat, I have messed with pressures but it's vague whatever I do, at slow speed you can feel it shifting from one tread block to another, wearing well though and fine at speed.
Not sure what I'll use next, had Anakee3's on it which felt great but the front cupped quite badly. Pirelli Scorpions anyone??

Leigh,  you're in for a pleasant shock, they are stunning in the wet, especially on the brakes... :)

The pr4's speed up the tip in to corners a little bit, sounds like you will like that, the bike is just a bit more flick able,  some recommend lowering tyre presure two or three psi as the pr4 has a hard carcass, giving lots of feedback, in summer I keep mine at or near the recommended pressure, in winter I drop it a little.
I think the tyre is well suited to the Veek, a good all rounder, and superb wet tyre.

I'm running standard pressure  in mine, but you could drop it by a couple of psi if you find the ride too harsh.
