Helmet rubber seal
« on: September 10, 2016, 14:21:13 »
( no one is to dare making a joke regarding title !!!!)
Has anyone on here replaced the seal that goes round the visor opening ?, my Schuberth one leaks, and I would like to do something with it, I have searched but cannot find any replacements, so wondered if a 3mm rubber seal would work.

Anyone ?  (was not sure where to post this, suspect if in wrong place it will be moved)

Hi,I have a mate who had a problem with his Schuberth visor leaking at the top and water running down the inside. The helmet was about 2 years old and he took it back to the dealer he bought it from for advice and the seal was replaced under warranty by Schuberth.

Thanks for that, but my C2 is a bit old for that to be done, I love the helmet, so want to try and sort out, hence that's why I thought of some self adhesive type rubber

You could try fitting a rubber seal (or maybe try a line of silicone - left to dry before closing visor...) but you may find that any gap is not uniform along the visor and adding some rubber may cause a gap further along.
Of course you could always try making something out of very thin latex type material...

Have you asked 'Schuberth' if they do a repair service?
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can. Nothing travels faster than the speed of time.

I have the same issue, I've used double sided tape where the seal is not sticking, and replace it when that doesn't stick, last one lasted 1 year 8 months!
Life is short - You have to enjoy it on a Wee-Strom!

it would appear that schuberth do not produce any bits now for C2, and from what I have read, the only way to replace the seals is by returning the helmet to Germany for them to do it, cost would be far above what helmet is worth. I can feel a bodge approaching !!!!

What I was thinking about doing was to remove the seal altogether, then use some 4mm thick neoprene rubber seal, a very thin strip. This is self adhesive, so should stick if clean enough. The visor should compress the rubber, and with hope (and a fair wind) seal water out.

well, I thought what the hell, stripped interior out of helmet, then poured boiling hot water on the seal, which softened the glue and I was able to remove it, spent a couple of days working a rubber lube into the strip, then cleaned and re glued it back again.
IT DOES NOT LEAK and seems to seal well now, I suspect the rubber had started to go hard.

At least my old lid has a bit more life left in it now. (also got a new visor which is great as does not mist up like the old one)

If it's that old were seal is gone, might actually need a new lid to be honest.

Its a C2, manufacture date 2009. Its only ever had my head in it, I have never dropped it, its done thousands of miles, but is like new.
I like it, its quiet, snug and comfortable.
Why would I buy a new one ?
Would you replace the plastics on your bike if they were 9 years old or so ??
The construction of the shell is fibre glass. I am sure you would not replace your boats hull just because its getting on a bit.

Yes I know that the manufactures say replace helmet after 5 years, but never been told why.

you need to replace helmets because sweat spit hair products and other things  cause the helmet interior to degrade even if you don't wear it the atmosphere is degrading it

OK, each to their own.
The inside is like new, in fact the headlining is new !!!!!
I have a new crash Helmet, a Scorpion EXO500, but its not as comfortable or as quiet as my old Schuberth. I normally only use it now when I have ridden in heavy rain, and I dry my old one out.

I hear what you all say.
