What do you do with your retired helmets?
« on: August 29, 2016, 12:29:20 »
Is there somewhere they can be recycled or are they landfil?

BTW, love this from the Snell foundation http://www.smf.org/helmetfaq#aWhyReplace, 'The Foundation recommends that if you are participating in an activity that requires that you wear a helmet, you avoid hitting stuff with your head.'

Check with your local emergency response people or hospitals. They can sometimes use old helmets to teach people how to remove them in case of emergency.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

That's a great idea GW, never thought of that. I just stuff them in the garage for now, I really hate the idea of landfill and try to avoid it as much as possible.

This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can. Nothing travels faster than the speed of time.

Maybe decorate your garage or man cave by displaying your old lids with some brite work and led lights?  Sentimental reasons I suppose...

First thing I do is to cut the straps off so it can't be used properly again. Giving them to local St. John, Red Cross etc, for practising is good. When I did motorsport rescue we carried an air powered helmet saw so old helmets were handy to practise on, it's very noisy inside having a helmet cut off with a saw.
