Standard screen settings poll (Glee)
« on: June 04, 2015, 23:04:35 »
Standard screen only ......I'm trying all 3 settings to compare. What do/did members prefer on 2012 onwards bikes? I'm getting a bit of movement over 70mph with a headwind on the highest setting. Will try lowest next.

I tried my bike properly today, with screen in the stock/mid position no buffeting but very noisy above 70. If I raise or lower my head an inch there was no improvement so didn't try changing it, now swapped for an adjustable Airflow & much better.

I'm 6'1''

I personally don't find the original screen too bad for airflow noise, and get no real vibration. But I know having the wrong helmet for the screen can make a big difference.

IMO the Givi Airflow screen is almost too effective in summer as I find it gets a little stuffy behind it. Also, I've seen on my Veek with the OEM screen where I wasn't having misting problems on my visor, but another bike with the Airflow was.

As always YMMV.

I agree noise is often helmet related. I am talking bike wobble with a headwind overtaking a lorry at 70 mph. Buffeting is an often used term to cover different problems. I know more raked back screens I.e. sports tourers get less bike wobble than taller bikes with more upright screens. I wondered which position on the V-Strom gives minimal problem. The current model seems better than my 2011. I have just set mine to the lowest setting and will report back after a motorway test. I suppose I ought to do all 3 settings on the same day in the same direction, time permitting and allen key in my pocket!

Did the test - all 3 settings on same bit of M4 in both directions within 2 hours. Windy and moderate traffic. Results:

Low - most wind noise even at low speed but least sudden bike movement at high      speed.
Mid  - wind noise a lot less at lower speeds and slightly more bike movement at high speed.
High - very quiet up to 50 mph. Over 70 mph bike most likely to be unsteady occasionally with sudden gusts.

Decided to stick with high setting as majority of my riding is sub 70 mph and not motorway. If I did motorway miles a lot I'd probably go for a touring screen but for my riding I prefer the look of the stock one. Most of the time round and about the standard screen should serve me well. So for my 6' height, it's the high position. I did not like the wind on my helmet as soon as I pulled off, on the low position, more like a naked bike.
One of the reasons I bought the DL was to stop feeling I had to break speed records on the Daytona. If I can learn to enjoy a more restrained motorcycle lifestyle, that will suit this 65 year old!

Tip - when re-fitting the screen, put the grommets back in, push screen with them on just into the fairing holes then press the bolts in to push the grommets into position before tightening. The rubber pushes in easily from the centre with the bolt.

Is it to do with size/ height?

I am 5' 7'' and I use the standard screen on medium setting. All seems good. But I expect if I were a lanky blighter over 6' things might be different with buffeting etc.?

Remember the average Japanese man is only about 5' 7'' tall (I am not Japanese by the way), and to be fair, much of the design will be for export market however, Japanese people will design for their own build and height. The average British man is 5' 9'' tall I believe.

I got rid of my MRA touring screen, which was good, but I didn't really need it and I think the standard Glee screen is fine BUT for smaller riders IMHO.

Lowest setting, 2x4mm rubber tap washers under the bottom 2 mounts only, aprilia/BMW mirrors.
