Sump plug washers
« on: June 25, 2013, 11:49:02 »
Where's the best place to buy a new sump plug and washer for my imminent oil change?

Do you change these every time?

Are they even called sumps on bikes?!

If all you want is a sump washer then pop into a local motorcycle shop and buy one. If you are also buying other stuff for the service like an oil filter, then try wemoto (won't be worth the postage just for a sump washer).

I'd replace it every time, I mean what's the point not doing so for 25p.

Some people will reuse them, I've done so in the past, but why take the chance its buggered and you only find out after you've taken the sump plug out.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

If I get my filter from a dealer I always get one, 20p.

I have used the one on my zx6r for 4 changes now and it's still doing its job.

Yes, sumps.  :thumb:

As above, Wemoto.  Bung a few in your basket when you buy filters and plugs.  If you're doing air filter then don't chuck away the rubber gasket.

I'll bet the original will go through a dozen oil changes without leaking. When replacing, I get a flat Honda drain plug washer instead of the hollow Suzuki one. It will probably last forever.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Cheers chaps, at very least it means I can do the oil change with the gear I've got (excluding the torque wrench.)

Local Suzuki dealer is also a Honda dealer and when I got a new washer the parts bloke said to use a Honda one as better and cheaper (like Greywolf said above). Note that was just in 2011 (on a 2004 bike) after about 32000 miles so it had done well!
=================================
DL650K4 bought in April 2005 with 1800 miles, now showing 45000 (July 2018).

Mine lasted the whole EuroAsia trip which included at least 10 changes. I had spares somewhere but they are so small they got lost. Never needed them, no stops, no leaks

The original one I got... OK maybe it was changed on first second service. But I worked out it had gone through 14 oil changes and I only changed it as the sump plug head was rounded a bit when I got the bike and was gradualy getting worse
