Shoei DS Hornet Crash Helmet
« on: January 02, 2012, 21:18:29 »
A quick review of the above crash helmet.

After finding the chin strap of my HJC CL XS crash helmet frayed frayed I decided that it was time to replace it.  I had been looking at the Arai Tour for a while but continuing price increases meant that I was going to look elsewhere.
A helmet that had good reviews was the Shoei DS Hornet so after trying one for size and finding it a good fit I decided to take the plunge.  At the time I was at a bike show and was offered one for £250, £80 under list price and it was in white, the colour I wanted.
Comfort wise the helmet is really good, more comfortable than the HJC helmet it replaces.  Build quality is good too and my Scala intercom unit also fits in really nicely with the mike staying put, not having to be moved each time the helmet is put on and taken off like the HJC.
Up till today I could not fault the helmet.  That was until the first time I rode into a low sun.  In this aspect the HJC's longer peak is better, the Shoei one is not to effective in the area and I may have to look at a way of extending it.
This is one concern I had and looking at the Arai, the peak seems shorter on the Shoei.
Hope this helps others in their choice of replacement crash helmet.

I'm please you like your Shoei DS, just goes to show - horses for courses. I bought one when they first came out and returned it because of the wind noise. I have never experienced such a noisy lid ! I got a replacement from Shoei UK (eventually) and it was actually worse and I ended up flogging it on ebay for a minor loss as they refused to refund without sending it to Japan for tests.... That was on my Honda Varadero so I guess different bike diferent outcome ? I do recall it being comfy and I think it's lighter than My tour x3. I seem to recall someone at the bike show selling universal peak extenders for MX lids, might be worth a google search. Best of luck, Bry  :thumb:

My MX helmet has a flip down visor under the front of the peak. Same idea as a car sun visor I guess. I haven't used it yet, but it looks like it could work well.

I suspect you're right - all down to mirror type/position, screen type/position, build, posture etc. Going to try an X4 at end of Jan (no XL X3s around any more).

Why is buying a lid such a pita!

I've the X-lite X551 enduro style lid-brilliant on my wee, but shite on the Gfs Fazer. If I'm riding the Fazer I tend to just remove the peak and it's all sorted.

I looked for an x551 but absolutely nobody had them in stock for me to try on.
