Visor misting up - Help!
« on: November 29, 2011, 10:35:00 »
G'day

So, after ignoring my mate's advice to get a pinlock compatible helmet, I settled on the Uvex Enduro. Not pinlock, but has Uvex's 'Supravision' which I read up on, and had decent feedback on.

1 week of use now, and it has misted/fogged more than I'd hoped, especially as my journey's have been less than 15 minutes (admittedly, pretty cold out at the mo)

Any advice? When I bought it, the blokes in the shop said that they doubted the 'Supravision' would work, so I plumped up £20 for an anti-fog insert. This flew out on my 2nd day of use, not exactly ideal.

The issue is the Enduro's visor is curved both horizontally andvertically, meaning that its difficult to get an insert.

I've read about DIY pinlock kits, anyone got any advice on these?

My dad mentioned that back in't day, they would cut a potato in half, then rub it on the inside and outside of the visor then wipe off and it worked!

Help much appreciated right now!

Cheers

Before inserts were around the routine would be to ensure the inside was spotlessly clean and then spray some Bob Heath Anti Fog spray onto the inside of the visor and rub it in with your fingers. It worked OK but you would have to re-do it every week/fortnight during the winter.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

If the curves in the visor allow fitting a pinlock it's probably the least hassle. There's also an insert from Fogcity (or something like that) that a lot of people swear by (it's more a stick on type insert IIRC.)

Try a longer journey.

I find that if my helmet has been in a warm house then is taken out on a cold or wet day then it tends to mist up at first. But after a while as the temperature equalises then it's not so bad.

Maybe your helmet is not so bad as you think?

+1 for Frez's answer, its what I did before all these pin-insert-y things came along. That and neat washing up liquid smeared on and polished off if Bob Heath ran out...however...

Ride magazine did a test on this very subject and Fogtech came out as the best buy. See the whole test here:

Thanks very much, it seems Fog-Tech is exactly what I'm after, I'll give it a go.

First of all though, I'll take onboard the earlier advice about trying a longer journey, as that could well be the case.

Thanks so far chaps

if it's not pissing it down I always have the lid ever-so-slightly open, zero fog that way.

I have heard quite a few people recommend the washing up liquid trick - not tried it on my visor but I have tried it on a set of lenses for my older pair of cycling glasses and it does seem to work o_O

I've been using Fog City inserts for the last 12 years and find them excellent, probably the best £15 accessory I've ever had. There is one for double curvature visors (the Aria fitment I believe) which should do the job. They can be a bit tricky to fit properly so if you get one take your time to get it just right.

I've used the Bob Heath spray, but found it needed reapplication too often. No idea where I got onto it, but I got some "Clarity DEFOG it" from an eyewear shop in Brasingstoke (at least I think it was Basingstoke, I found them online, called and ordered by phone.) I think it was less than a tenner. It's a tiny bottle and you just drip a few drops on the inside and polish it into the inside of the visor. It worked and lasted well, I used it for quite some time with a dark visor in winter (during the day) on my previous helmet. I think it is intended for ski and MX goggles originally.

Of all the advice, this has been the most valuable! I'm pleased with the helmet and now find that althought the visor does mist up, this is only generally when very slow moving, and fully closed. Any decent speed and its fine, and at slow speed, I prefer it open anyway!

Cheers all

I do recall it used to work  :rain:

Folks have been using washing-up liquid on bathroom mirrors to stop them misting up for years - really works too.

I tried EVERYTHING before pinlock, varying degrees of success.
For me,pinlock is the ONLY solution on both my Arai and schuberth. Now, I NEVER get misting up and I ride all (alright, most of) the year

On our last trip to the south of France fattie forgot the anti mist spray, that's him fired, but we tried everywhere to buy one, even the main dealers, no luck. So the question is what do the French use? Well, one main dealer told us to try washing up liquid or slice a spud and rub it on the inside of said visor. I chose the Fairy and fattie was told to use a spud as punishment. It pissed down for five hours on the way home and both performed well. Don't ask what variety the spud was I've no idea, I'm just interested in seeing if the spud takes root along with all the mould.

Washing -up liquid was the one to use before anything else was around (apologies - apart from 'the potato', of course), but people started to complain that chemicals in it eventually made your visor brittle, and full of rainbows (like the drugs most of er, some people were on then). that's also why you don't wanta wash Your car/bike with Fairy Liquid, BTW. Chemical reactions huh? Who needs 'em?

Anyway, that was when you made a visor last as long as possible, something most people don't need to do now! So no need to worry bout bad effects, I think?

My pinlock works great - the other day, first bit of misting I've seen in 2 years!

If anyone fancies trying it, cat crap is recommended as a visor treatment - go on! Rush to the litter tray and try it right now!

Washing up lipsquid contains an awful lot of salt based chemicals that *could* cause damage to the visor, It works, but I think witht he price of a new visor being what? £30+, I may avoid it!

I havbe the Nolan version of pinlock - never hjad an issue with fogging at all, and would be wary about getting a lid without the facility for pinlock.

Love the cable tie idea - nowt wrong with a bit of Heath Robinson mods!!
