Weird shaped head...
« on: November 08, 2011, 13:58:24 »
I took my sister helmet shopping the other day, and after exhausting the stock of three decent shops, we had to give up!

We tried lids from Box, HJC, Aria, Schoei. Shark... full face, flip front... all in S or XS, they all fitted fine around the cheeks, but she could still 'nod' her head fairly easily with the helmet held still.

Is there such a thing as a company that makes tailor fitted lids? Or is there another brand I've missed that might fit better? The only alternative I can think of is to get the best fitting helmet we can find, and just live with the up/down movement - she'll ''only'' be a pillion (I know, terrible attitude, but...)

There are lots more makes to try...

Even different manufacturers helmet models will fit differently, so one Shoei won't fit quite like another Shoei.

Maybe take her to the NEC show and go around every stall selling helmets. Sounds like a great day out  :haha:

Going to the show might well be the answer. The other thing to try whilst there would be to see if any helmet manufacturers have stands and speak to them. Some used to supply different size pads that velcro in place to get the fit just right. Not sure if any still do them. All new helmets give a bit and settle down after being worn for a while so getting one that's just a tad on the tight side might also work.

I ended up with an AGV S4SV which has pretty tight cheek pads - and I ended up going down from XL to L.....

Pop over to George Whites, they have quite a choice..

Arai do a fitting service at thier 5* dealers where you can mix & match various lining parts for a perfect fit. Gawd knows what that will cost mind...

My Mrs had the same problem , she has a head the size of a baked bean . She ended up with a AGV in the end and it was a nice fit .

NEC does sound like a good idea, didn't think of that :shy:

Ah, AGV! I knew there was a big one we'd missed! And yeah, the Arai lids we found weren't in the 5* dealers. Something to try!

I shall pop down to George Whites at some point too...

Arai helmets can be bought with different size cheek pads & skull caps. When I got my viper GT, I thought it was a good fit when I tried it on in the shop. When the salesperson checked the fit, she suggested changing the cheek pads. She knew what she was talking about, as after changing them the fit was even better!
So do seek out a good dealer...

The smug Arai rep told me Arai helmets are safer because they are so expensive, but he couldn't quite  explain how that works. Perhaps they stuff the extra space with banknotes?

It's always worth having a look at the UK Gov SHARP helmet website to see what rating any helmet you're looking at shapes up. When it first started up the "big" manufacturers (Aria, Shoei and the like) didn't come out too well and in response they criticised the program quite heavily. Strange that their newer helmets seem to be doing much better! The main thing you seem to get with more expensive helmets is quality of finish and better lining materials that last longer before splitting and wearing through. There doesn't seem to be any link between price and safety I.e. the more you spend the more protection you get. A proper fit that is comfortable is more important than looking flash and buying one that matches the colour of your latest bike but gives you a headache after half an hours riding...

The other thing increased price often gives you is reduced weight, reduced noise and gimmicks.

The gimmicks may or may not be useful to you, e.g. pin lock insert, ventilation, blue tooth, removeable washable lining, quick release visor, integrated sun visor.

More expensive helmets often come with the gold sticker indicating it has been certified for track racing. You won't be allowed on a track without a helmet bearing the gold sticker.

Yeah, I'm not particularly bothered about cost/brand - so long as the thing fits! I quite like my internal sun visor, but its my sisters lid, so that's her problem :P
