Police hi-viz
« on: October 20, 2011, 08:18:18 »
Watched news this am, with that caravan site clearance op going on...quite impressed by quality look of police hi-viz jackets (gilet's?) with lots of pockets etc. They look tough (the jackets) and like they have 'lockout' closures on 'em, which are crap in my opinion. Mind this may all be a figment of the rubbish pixel count on my telly!
Can they be obtained by the public?

Are you thinking of buying one to pre-empt the coming legislation that is going to make it a legal requirement to wear one when riding your bike?

Buying one now will not meet the legal requirements. The only way they will be able to enforce it is if they have a standard like BSI6658 for helmets. That will mean any existing hi vis will not be up to standard, and the cost will go up as manufacturers will have to submit their clothing for testuing. Otherwise I could simply turn round and say the small amount of reflective piping on my 14 year old jacket is hi vis so I comply...
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

Hmmm. Thanks for the linkys, and info, and thoughts...It was a sudden rush of blood away from my head (as usual!): I sometimes find myself attracted by clothing with lots of pockets and fiddly bits (related somehow I suspect for my desire to get as much under the seat of the Strom as I can  ), but I forgot about my principled stand against compulsory hi-vis!
Also, new they are expensive (95 quid+), and might look a little too police-like!

Now where do I keep my taser?!

Just get one of the black tactical vests instead, still loads of pockets on those.

If you think looking like a copper will make you safer think again.  I have a yellow vest with arms and am in two minds about it.....

If you ride on the motorway then get used to people pulling past you, going "Oh shit"" and then thinking you'll be impressed by them pulling in front of you and slamming on the brakes....

On my Bikesafe one of the coppers mentioned that this happens to him.

A disgrace to biking...

True that, particularly on a motorway, always a bunch of people rocketing past you and then when there's a highway patrol vehicle in the slow lane the fast lane often slows to 60 something. It's not like they can pull over 10 cars, just keep going, you're causing more safety issues if you slow down :GRR:

I am neutral on the police checker stuff, but it the cheapest waterproof and breathable overjacket I could find.  Does the job extremely well.
