Over tightened sump nut - options?
« on: July 05, 2013, 15:43:49 »
So, like a idiot, I've over tightened the sump plug. I was trying to undo it, and was actually tightening it, serious idiot territory. I've done the oil change, put the plug back in, and it does tighten, although when it gets to the stage where it feels like its really tightening up, it then goes loose. Basically I've buggered the thread. As it stands now, the plug is in, as tight as it will go. No oil seems to be leaking, and it is pretty tight. But I'm just aware it's not as it should be.

What options do I have? Are there any thread repair solutions?

Quick replies appreciated (probably unlikely given its Friday afternoon and the weather is GLORIOUS!)

Cheers.

There will come a time when it needs to be removed. At that time, you can determine whether a thread chaser will fix things. If not, a helicoil, timesert or tapping for a larger drain plug will be necessary. It's not a nut.

But can it be ridden as it stands? It's not leaking on tick over, but I've no way of knowing if riding it would work the plug loose.

It's not going to be a gusher in any case. It will almost certainly be fine but check the ground for oil before each ride.

There's no way I'd ride it like that, get it sorted..
