I would definitely get new rubber..... I can't see you gettng 12K out of rear and still be legal.
Most Wee riders report around 9 to 10 K out of a Trailwing rear.... and I won't even get that. I'm expecting my rear to be shot at about 7 to 8 K.

I would say probably yes, see the tyres threads for advice on what to go for. The rear will probably be squared off a bit and both will be slightly more prone to punctures. Get new fitted and scrubbed in during the weeks before your trip.

And post up pictures on your return... :thumb:

Yep, get new and get them settled in before you go, if only for peace of mind   :thumb:

I agree with cearnshaw - Anakee's should be considered.

I had 11,000 ish out of my oem 'wings. That said, seems a good time to get fresh boots - I'm another happy anakee camper

I'm aiming for Anakee II's when the time comes

just far too many miles yet to live with the Trailwings :(

I've done just under 11k from new on mine and the rear is down to 2mm of tread (front 3mm) - my dealer reckons I'll get another 1000-1500 miles out of the rear, but I'm heading for Spain next month and will do at least 1500 miles on the trip.

Anakee 2's seem to be the overwhelming favourites - can I get away with just changing the rear, or do I need matching tyres front & rear?

thanks for the feed back one and all , I would get a few more miles out of the wings but I think I will treat myself to some new rubber and be on the safe side , I don't like the wings anyway they don't seem to say much to me in the wet    OK in dry but wet it all gets a bit lost in the damp or maybe that's me . time will tell . more opinions are wellcome :ty:

I'd done 7.5k on my rear tyre. but changed it to do my trip. Yep Anakee's 2 for me  put 2.5k on mine touring two up fully loaded. and it's showing no wear & kept it shape. I will highly recommend them.

I did it and it worked fine for me. I had a Maxxis Presa Detour on the front and put an Anakee 2 on the rear, by the time the Anakee 2 rear was worn out (~15k miles later) I changed both so that I have Anakee 2 front and rear. As long as the tyre tread isn't vastly different (sportsbike tyre vs dual sport tyre for example) then I'd say you are quite safe. You will notice very quickly if there are problems anyway.

theory states try and keep similar stickyness on both ends

so on sports bike if changing to a known extra sticky rear to the originals - really need both to be similar otherwise one end will grip more than the other and  :limp:

don't know about trailwings vs. anakee

personally I always err on side of caution

but that's me

Alternative view? Loads of friendly helpful bike shops in Bavaria / Black Forest on the Swiss border. Change your tyre there after you've really squared it off on the way down.
