Top box or bag
« on: September 02, 2025, 14:20:53 »
Looking for recommendations for either a top box or bag that fits directly to the Suzuki rack that comes with the 650XL, tried Givi rack but don’t want to remove the current rack and grab rails etc. thanks

There have been various 650XT models across various years and the rear carrier (rack) has changed over the years.

Which year model do you have? and what rack is currently fitted to the bike?
Even the Suzuki standard box requires a adaptor plate to make it fit the original rack, there is no direct clip-on option to the original rack.

Givi, Shad, SW Motech, Hepco & Becker, will all do an adaptor kit that will be specific fitment to the original rack - the parts kit you need will depend on the year and model of the bike.

You can use a strapped tail pack, various designs exist but they will all have straps you'll have to put around secure points of the bike, and generally I don't like them on the rack, I do use one on the back seat when camping.

I'm a top box bloke, the bigger the better.
You don't remove the original handrails, the rack adaptor bolts straight on top, mine is an alloy Givi plate with the 58 aluminium top box. It fits very neatly.

Always a top box for me, so useful for helmet and gloves when out on the bike and stopped for a tea, pee or maybe sight see. More secure than a bag, I also keep a couple of extra tools, a torch and chain lube in mine. I couldn't be without a top box and panniers for when I need them though I don't ride with panniers fitted unless I need them, they are so wide I may as well go by car because they stop me filtering.

The main deciding factor may come down to cost though as fixings and top boxes are getting ridiculously expensive. Just my 2p worth, I'm sure you already knew all of this but you did ask.  :smirk: :thumb:

Thanks for advice etc. Mine is 650XT 2022.
What I’m struggling with is can’t seem to find correct plate etc without having to remove the genuine rack/grab rails. I’m wanting to fit a plate directly to the rack that is on the bike now or does that not exist ? Here is what mine looks like.

I wouldn't be that bold, but it did on mine so I can't see why it won't on yours.
If in doubt buy it from Sportbike with their free returns policy.
Ordered today it would be with you tomorrow.
I think the only difference in your standard rack fitment and mine is the colour.
Worth a try?
You can see my rack under the plate in the picture and for reference it's a Monokey rack I think.

https://www.givi.it/my-motorcycle/bike/Suzuki/dl-650-v-strom-17--24

you will need
Givi  SRA3112 (monokey aluminium plate included for fitting larger givi boxes)
or
Givi SR311s plus M5 plate for monokey boxes or M5M for the smaller Monolock boxes

Plus whatever box you want, I have a V46 for both big bikes, big enough without going crazy

Thanks to all who have replied with info, much appreciate.
Going to get the SRA3112 so that way I can keep my original rack on the bike👍🏼 what I’d chosen was the SR3112 but with this setup you need to remove the original rack completely and then fit a new plate like the M5M
Sorted 👍🏼

I like my bags but with all the shit I carry I bought a plate and re mounted my top box that came with the bike with bolts, I may look for a smaller one though, I don't need the height at the moment.
