Maxxis M6103 Promaxx - anyone tried them?
« on: September 02, 2016, 19:23:41 »
Just noticed my rear anakee is close to the limit and was thinking of giving these a try.

They look OK to me... I use and trust Maxxis on my DRZ so would have qualms about having one fitted to my Wee.
They are also really well priced - £47 delivered from Oponeo.

I'm not worried about off-road credentials as mine does not go there

Did you buy this tyre in the end? If so, what do you think?

Cheers

Not yet.
I became distracted (bought another bike ) & so pulled the Wee off the road for the winter at the end of Sept, so then decided I'd wait until spring before getting new tyres sorted.
When I do I most likely will get them though.

I think the closest front to our size is the M6102 in 100/90 17.

Which strangely is slightly more expensive than the 150/70 17 rear!

I have fitted Maxxi MA-PD to the front and a M6029R to the rear, not been out on it yet but do not expect a problem.

Do it today as there may not be a tomorrow.

Live in Rothley, Leicestershire.

Well I've gone and done it, had approval for this capital expenditure and so just pulled the trigger on a Promaxx rear for my Wee.
Gone up a smidge at £55 delivered but I can stretch to that.
Lets hope it's not a POS. :smirk:

Well I had it fitted and have put the wheel back on.
Not a bad looking tyre I think.

Will be taking her for an MOT next week but I suspect it'll be a month or so before I can really comment on it's road manners.

My verdict is in - great tyre.  :)

Road from Somerset to mid Wales last weekend, 2up with a top box full of clothes.

Rode a mix of roads ranging from slow gravelly back road to fast A roads which involved some very spirited riding and fast corners. The tyre performed excellently and gave me confidence in it.

Wear rate should be as good as any other touring tyre as it's a quality make but just at an entry level cost, why pay up to double for another brand of tyre?

Looks good Rich. Will you keep us posted on wet grip, and wear rate?

Hopefully not! lol

If I ever get caught in the rain then sure.
Wear rate, I suppose I'd better measure the tread depth now so I've got something to base it on. :thumb:

Just a quick update on the tyre.

It's been great for 2,000 miles. Good grip wet or dry.
Only concern I have is wear rate. I didn't actually measure the tread depth when new (doh!) but looking at the wear markers that are either side of centre I'd say 1/2 the tread is now gone, hard to be sure though.

Just to put my use into perspective, I don't commute so those 2000 miles are fun miles. I mostly accelerate hard (though she's just a 650) and corner hard. I also ride 2up quite a bit on this bike so that all adds to the wear per mile.

If it lasts another 2,000 miles then I think I'll be pretty happy with that, for a tyre that only costs £55 (+ £10 fitting at my local bike shop). I do around 2.5k miles a year on this bike so it's a new rear every 2 years, which I think is OK.

What are you running on the front?
I used the M6102/M6103 combination on my old Kwak GT550 and found them to be very good. As there is no matching front for the Wee/Glee, I'm curious what you're using (and because I sustained a rear puncture in my OEM trailwing on the way home yesterday, so am looking for a replacement).

I have a pretty worn out, 6 year old Continental Trail Attack 2.
It has scalping on the edges and occasionally makes you think the wheel bearings have gone, it also causes the bars to wobble at 40 mph when slowing down on engine braking...

I'm in the process of picking what front to go with..
I'm concidering this..

£69 if you're not in a hurry for it.

or here for £70.66

I'd spotted the M6029 (radial, sport touring) which appears to get some good reviews and also good value. Shame there is no matching front though. I still have the OE front with loads of life in it so not sure what to go for.
