Clem Cattini, my favourite drummer ever.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Paul was a useful drummer ..... he was the drummer on Band on the Run. But Ringo was the drummer that the rest of the Beatles chose. Which is a key point. The former drummer Pete Best was too Rock n Roll whereas Ringo was more Blues. Also he was fractionally older and a useful stabilising influence. Crucially he fitted into the musical space that John and Paul wanted.
Similarly is Nick Mason a brilliant drummer? I don't know, but he was undoubtedly the right drummer for what the rest of Pink Floyd were trying to do.

As a drummer (of limited ability) myself even I would agree with some of those sentiments Brockett.
I despair when I see a drum solo unless I've specifically gone to a drum clinic, all dedicated solos belong in the bin other than at clinics.
If you have neighbours then buy an electric kit, I spent my first year's student loan on mine and I still use it daily some 20yrs later.

That being said, as both a drummer and a fan of some exceedingly unlistenable 'music', drums are key, I'd lose the singer first :).
I mean, you've got to admire this blokes effort and dedication to making very little money....

* How do you know the stage is level, the drummer drools out of both sides of his mouth.
How do you know a drummer is at the door, the knock speeds up.
What's the difference between a drummer and a drum machine, about 3 bars by the end of the song.

Yes, I've heard them all.

I like to dance but haven't had an occasion to for a few years. I was in a night club in Moscow some years ago and dancing with three women (who I was with) at the same time in a club with two thirds men cliental. I should have been feeling smug but I was in fear. Had this been an English night club I would have expected jealousy to cause me a beating.  :icon_batterup:

Suddenly the music stopped when in full swing and the DJ pronounced in English that I had been voted King of the dance floor by the occupants. I do love to dance but in truth, I'm not good at it so not only was I shocked by the announcement but also relieved that I probably wasn't going to leave in a ambulance.

So, what gives me the ability to dance at all? Well the answer is rhythm. I usually close my eyes and listen to the beat in the music, oblivious to the lyrics and sometimes the melody, I just dance to the beat. Usually the beat is from the base drum, sometimes the base guitar and sometimes the singer, but not often. To be honest, I think I could dance to the base drum and the base guitar alone.

Is the drummer an important part of a band? Indubitably, the most important part. Do you need to see me dance? God NO!  :lala:   :happydance:

Just listened to the drummer in the video above. I could no more dance to that than a GPMG (machine gun) being fired, at me. It's just a very talented noise but I bet that when not showing off he is a very, very good drummer.  :thumb:

A drummer who can keep time will lead and control the band and that is as it should be.  I do not hate or even dislike drummers.  My favourite track ever is : - Stormy Monday by Mountain. On this track everyone involved plays their part without blasting over the others.

There are exceptions to a time keeping drummer that also work well, at least for me.
On early Black Keys tracks ( the later stuff is so so) Carney can be heard changing his time a lot.
I thought it was a lack of  instinctive rhythm ( you have it or you don't , no click track ) but no , seeing their early performances Carney is watching Auerbach all the time and changing his tempo to match the guitarist who is leading ..odd, subtle, but works
You get a feel of it on this track, but to be fair Auerbach is playing the bass and lead lines at the same time so has his hands full :icon_wink:

It's my neighbour's annual fireworks party tonight. We go every year to be civil but part of me wants to feign a headache, covid, unplanned foot amputation, anything, so we can get out of going...

Why? If you don't want to go then don't.  :GRR:
So how's it going so far then?

Wouldn't it be funny if they don't really want you there, but feel obliged to invite you "because it's the neighbours."

If any of my neighbours ever spoke to me and invited me to a social event I'd suffer a sudden chill and sore throat.

It's always best to nip this in the bud so to speak. A last minute "I've caught a cold " or "I forgot I was elsewhere tonight so can't make it" doesn't wash and it's you who feels bad for telling porkies. At some reasonable point say a month orso before is enough to simply say you won't be attending. You don't have to say why. With any luck you won't be expected to be there next year either........
So how's it going so far then?

Now there's cold weather for the 2-wheel commute, and cars are slower to warm up, I'm noticing stinky diesel fumes more and more. Generally city air's got noticeably cleaner so it's a shock to the senses go back in time when there's some antiquated oil burner coughing pollution alongside you in slow traffic.  :icon_batterup:
(I appreciate our petrol-burning bikes are no environmental angels but they're way better than some 4x4 diesel that doesn't even get warm on a two mile trip to pick up the paper and a pint of milk).

If anyone sees the sun can you tell it we've counted to 10 so it can come out to play now.  Last seen in late October.

It appeared at around 2pm today Mr Brockett. First time seen it in over a week I think. But don't worry it soon went again. I've been told it will make an appearance tomorrow, down in deepest darkest cornwall. Which is good as I will be there too.

It's appeared today in Northumberland, a rare sighting indeed...  :sunny:
It's pronounced 'twenty-one-twelve'

It appeared in Yorkshire but then I couldn't see. Bring back the clouds. Bah Humbug.  :icon_razz:

May have to either use electrical tape on the top of the visor or buy a peaked helmet for when I next ride the bike with low sun...

Low sun is a pain. I have used 15 wide black tape and it does help a bit.
