Rear settings with luggage
« on: May 16, 2021, 10:29:17 »
Hi. I’m away on my Glee for a week tomorrow, with full standard luggage but no pillion.
It’s been a few years since I last did this and can remember I had to turn the pre-load on the shock up a bit, to stop it feeling like a chopper, but I can’t remember if I set the rear tyre at a higher pressure, like I do with my wife on the back.
As my luggage probably weighs a max of 25 kilos would it be wise to do so?
Sorry for such a basic question but it looks like we’re going to have a wet week so would like to get the rear tyre pressure as near where it should be as possible.
Thanks, Mark.

I normally ride two up and with luggage. At the moment I'm riding alone so I've adjusted the rear shock down from nearly max. to standard but left the tyre pressure up for when I carry a passenger again. It's easier to wind the spring up and down than faff with tyre pressures every time. I've also reset the damper to standard, it was a little stiffer to resist bounce when fully loaded. Again it's an easy adjustment.
So how's it going so far then?

I don't ever ride with pillion but I do adjust for luggage.
I usually add a bit of preload to maintain sag and then maybe the tiniest amount of rebound damping to compensate for the extra preload.
Tyre pressure wise, I'll go a couple of psi above standard but not as far as splitting the difference between solo and with pillion. 25kg is a drop in the ocean vs even a fairly small pillion fully geared.
You're going for a week so it's worth the faff for it to feel 'right'.

I just add some preload with luggage. No need for tyre pressure increase unless owners manual states it for pillion, which will weigh a lot more than your luggage.
