Dog Leg Levers
« on: August 08, 2021, 21:15:57 »
Unfortunately the arthritis in my left hand is getting worse to the point that even a cortisone injection into the affected area no longer has any effect. This has resulted in a situation where changing gear has become challenging and I am even avoiding some of my favourite roads as the number of gear changes causes a lot of pain. I have used as much adjustment as I can on my K6 and am now wondering if I should fit some different levers to make life easier.

Do any of you blokes have any experience of this or can recommend suitable levers that will help but not eliminate the problem. I never had a problem with growing older but no one warned me about the side effects. I don’t really want to adopt the clutch less off road style I use off road as I don’t think that will help the gearbox long term.

All suggestions gratefully received

On a hydraulic clutch,  If you are looking making it easier to pull the lever, I found upgrading the line to a Goodrich type brake line can help.

The thinner the internal diameter of the line the easier it'll be.

I believe the standard for Goodrich line is around 3.5mm however, there's even smaller internal diameter brake lines out there that'll make it even easier.

Just to add, it's not a huge difference but if you are struggling to pull the clutch I'm sure you'll Feel it .  :thumb:

Maybe time to consider a bike with DCT?

Not really it's still a motorcycle and still fun. I have a similar problem with my wrist. The Veek needs a lot of clutch work to ride smoothly or in traffic, more so than other bikes I've had. As Kwackboy says try the line and see if it helps or replace the master cylinder with a bigger one but I can't see a lever making much difference. I try not to use the clutch on the way up the gearbox after second it helps a bit and don't hold on to tight. If I get sore out on bike a break and then drop the riding down a level helps also.

I feel your pain Bob, I have wear and tear arthritis in my thumb joints my mother had two new joints in her 60s and still OK at 86 with just a little pain and I think I'm heading the same way. My problem is holding the grips for a long time my thump joints start aching. I've got some Oxford wrap around heated grips which softens the feel of the grips also considering some grip puppy's and the XT cruise control helps. Hope you find a solution, in the future I will consider a bike with DCT I'd be gutted to give up biking, been riding on and off since 1977!!!.

I have a similar problem to you, using the clutch lever constantly causes my hand to cramp up. I found this clutch lever, which is adjustable and brings the lever closer to the grip. This has helped the problem but not cured it. Hope it helps.

I have owned a Honda vfr1200f and and a vfr1200 crosstourer (heavy bugger) both with the DCT . Great to ride with instant up or down shifts using the flappy paddles for sportier times. Take a test ride.

Just been speaking to someone who suggested a quick shifter. Might not help with the lap times but any views? I love the K6 and really want to find a way to keep riding it.
