Digital Tyre Inflators
« on: October 23, 2022, 17:17:41 »
Hi everyone, has anyone got/bought/used one of the above?

Looking to buy something like this ... https://www.amazon.co.uk/Ring-Automotive-RTC2000-Cordless-Rechargeable/dp/B08ZSR8N5P ... or similar for that 'just in case' moment.

We'd love to see your views on them.
TIA

Personally, I have a compressor that plugs into the bike with an analogue dial.

Less to go wrong

To me, the one you're looking at is just another gadget that needs to be kept charged.

Does a digital inflation device fill the tyre with numbers?

Handy for when you've a flat tyre and flat battery at the same time.
I wouldn't attach too much importance to the digital readout. Just because it's in light up numbers doesn't necessarily mean it's any more accurate than a dial.

Whatever you get, use a quality gauge to learn what psi you need to set compressor to for it to be accurate. Mine always read 2 psi under so 38 would give an accurate 36psi.

It's digital, not binary.

Quote removed (it is never necessary to quote the post above)

So it fills the tyres with fingers?  :)

Do I have to identify my tyres as non-binary to my insurance company and DVLA?

To be honest, it would seem that genuine knowledge as to the efficacy of the product is, so far, zero.  Nothing in the light banter has inhibited an honest review. However, if you buy one you can be the first to tell us all about it. I'm sure we'd all like that.

In truth, it looks a bit bulky to carry on a bike. True, it has a torch. So do most phones. True, it's a power bank. My Airman compact, taken out of its casing, is much smaller and easier to pack. I do, however, carry an Oxford dial-type gauge as well, so that is more bulk but can at least be stored in a separate area. You pays your money and you takes your choice, I reckon.

I don't own one but a couple of things spring to mind from the specs on the add.
- 5200mAh is not that much, unless it can live plugged in when riding. Modern phones will eat that in a couple of charges.
- Still using micro usb to charge is a shame as those ports are fragile.

If you don't already own a power bank and would only need one very sparingly then combining devices will always save a bit of space. I'd probably wait for the inevitable usbC version or go with a cigarette lighter/optimate lead powered one. Any device you only use in an emergency wants to be as foolproof as possible.

I use this: https://rockycreekdesigns.co.uk/products/motopressor-pocket-pump

Small, fits in the tray under the seat. Does not need to be charged. Working great and saved me many times. Considering my small compressor takes about 8A I would not trust battery powered one. I start the bike and I can run my compressor as long as I have petrol in the tank :)  I don't know how long battery one will last. Lets say you have puncture and air leak. You are far from home and it is night. Lets say you need to stop every few miles to top up air. Battery one in that case is out of question. But this is my point of view :)

Pichulec, that looks almost identical to the Airman without its casing. When I can find a suitable blank, the gauge is coming off and seeing as I've already binned the fan the shaft will probably be dremelled down to virtually nothing. Very small and very handy.

I like the fact the "pocket pump" has an SAE connector as probably the same as others I have an SAE lead permanently connected to battery to plug my Optimate in.
