Dual sport/purpose tyres
« on: October 20, 2016, 15:58:08 »
Hi everyone,

I've had a look for some discussion on this topic and although I think it features in a lot of feeds the dedicated ones seem to be a few years old so I hope no one minds me starting this thread.

I currently have road pilot 4s on my wee, and although a great tyre, I have had 4 punctures in a year, 3 in the last 3 Months! I commute 40 miles a day and do about 14 miles of country lanes and I am sure it is this combined with the heavy  rain of late which is causing these.

I am thinking that a switch to dual purpose tyres may help my situation and although I am aware this may compromise some of my handling and comfort, I have to do something.

There seem so many to choose from I am not sure what will be best,  I have seen a lot about the anakees but looking at pictures (which I know is not a great judge!) doesn't seem to have much of a deep tread.

Can anyone offer any advice/give any recommendations from their own experiences?

Appreciate everyone's time,

Thanks,

Adam

When I sell pilot 4s on any bike I advise that these tyres like a few more psi/bar than normal as they tend to be as the road 3s were a bit puncture prone.
Alot of riders on here like a mixture of tyres but the ones that stand out are the anakee 2s and 3s and its the 3s seem to get great mileage but both have deep tread patterns.
Personally I ride on metzeler tourances (the older ones) and have never suffered any punctures, I'm now my third set but once they are worn out I'm trying the new metzeler Roadtec 01's which are 100% road tyres that are getting great reviews .

Thanks for your input kwackboy, if I changed the rear for say the anakee 2 or tourances, would I need to match the front or would it run okay with a RP4 and one of those on the rear until I needed to change the front?

Have put 4000 miles on my PR4 Trails including a tour to Austria.
On a fat old Varadero 2 up with stuffed hard luggage.
Cannot fault them. No punctures and superb grip wet and dry. Hope to get a good few thousand more out of them.

I've still got the original tyres on my 2015 Glee but reckon I will be changing them in the next couple of months and always intended to get Michelin PR4s as really liked the PR3s on my old Bandit (and never had a puncture).
However, as above, Metzeler Roadtec 01s seem to be getting very good reviews and come in std Glee sizes.
Has anyone tried these tyres yet and how have they been?

Roadtec 01's fitted now, 1500 miles done, great tyres, great grip wet or dry, bike handles and steers great, I had PR4's on before on a different bike but I prefer the Metzelers.

Naturally road tyres will have better / smoother handling than semi off road tyres but mixing the two would affect the ride .
Mixing the same type of tyre is OK but In my opinion a matching set is best .

Thanks Kwak boy, looks like a new set it is!

PR4's are good and I have had no issues with them, its purely the tread is to fine to handle the type of roads I am partly using, especially when the rain has been and washed all the gravel and silt over the country lanes I take, I am hoping Anakee 2s will manage this better and still be good in the cold and wet.

Anakee 2's will be the ideal tyre for what roads you are describing

Yes always used them cracking tyre & like the tread pattern goes well with the style of bike. Prob went through ten sets with the Vee then the Wee I would highly recommend them.

I had original ones for first 8000 miles on rear and front last 10000.  Replaced them for k60 scouts and I'm 100 % happy with them. They good on motorway and off road. Not making additional noise and cheap.

Do you run them at standard psi?
