Was the Vstrom ahead of the game?
« on: October 09, 2015, 20:32:39 »
Was out today and saw two BMW S1000 XRs and a Ducati Multistrada all spanking new on the A21 in Tunbridge Wells near to Cooper's BMW...having looked at the BMW on the web last night it seemed a coincidence perhaps it was a media test ride? Having liked the look of them I found this review of the bikes I saw earlier http://www.ridermagazine.com/road-tests/rider-comparo-2016-BMW-s-1000-xr-vs-2015-ducati-multistrada-1200-dvt-s.htm/

To me (save for the new technology, electronics, power, build quality etc et al ) the actual concept of the 2002 Vee Vstrom was ahead of it's game, yet for years it has been lambasted for not being the true all rounder a la the GSA etc but yet to my ignorant mind the concept of the Vstrom is alive and well in the new breed of adventure utilitarian biking....and for a lot less than the opposition.

I always thought the TDM was the originator. A bike that didn't fit into any category but was decent at most things.

You can see where I'm going here, Cagiva Elephant, Gran Canyon and of course the Navigator with the Tl 1000 motor. 2 years before the 'Strom. At a push you could mention he Africa Twin.... :stirpot:
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

yes I can and thought about a few of those bikes too, makes me wonder how BMW can suggest their concept of 'sports touring' holds. Never realised the Navigator had the TL lump. I had a TDM late 90's whilst my R1 was being serviced for a few days, I guess as you say that may have pioneered the concept.

I had 2 TDM 900's over a nine year period and during that time did several trips around Europe, rode a combined mileage of about 60K and thought they were really great bikes. However, I've had my Glee now for two years and done 13.5K miles and find it a nicer and more comfortable bike to ride. The only thing it lacks from the TDM is torque but as it's a smaller engine then that's to be expected.
