DL250 new purchase
« on: December 05, 2025, 17:27:48 »
Hello chaps, a retuning Vstrom member.
After a couple of years sabbatical from Suzukis,I have purchased myself a tiddler 250, although I'm picking it up next week.
Sold the 650 to get a tiger 800 but still think, pound for pound the Strom is the best bike out there by far.

I was pondering on buying another 650 or 800 but to be honest I'm Just not doing the miles anymore, certainly not at the moment anyway. Work life balance etc.
I've never even looked at the 250 until this month but I thought I'd jump on a try one.

It ticks Alot of boxes for sure, yes could do with another 20 bhp but its actually not too shabby for the spec.

I'll report back in once I've got a few miles on it.

Questions are

How many peeps have them on here and are they happy with them

Any sensible upgrades and service tips.

Cheers for now

Alan

Congratulations Alan. Do post some pictures when it arrives.

I don't recall many folks on here having them - probably half a dozen but I don't think they've posted any updates on their bikes for a while (hopefully they're still around and might update). I think there was talk of swapping sprocket size to get more top end etc - there might be the odd post somewhere.

It'll be interesting to get your views when you've got used to it etc.

Thanks matey, I'll give y'all a first impressions report, I'll try not to make it too boring as it's only a 250 and fairly basic.

It's really just a second ish bike but I was so intrigued I Just had to buy one.

I'll have a look Re the bigger front sprocket.

I bought one earlier this year for pottering around the Norfolk back roads. I have owned a GW250 on which it is based in the past so I knew what to expect from a power perspective. The VStrom has the advantage of luggage options. I went for GIVI. The engine is surprising. It will pull from 30 in top gear, so once on the move you don’t have to change gear too often. Acceleration is enough to keep up with cars driven ‘normally’ but overtaking can almost be ruled out. It is a ‘relax and go with the flow’ type of ride. It will sit at 70mph, but it is more suited to 60 and below speed limits. Strangely, adding a pillion has little effect on progress! I average mid 80s mpg.

Thanks for that, it's exactly what I want it for, been a delay in picking up, well. Weather been a big part but all being well, I'll go and get it tomorrow. It's about 70 miles away so a nice little run back.

Slight delay in posting, Bike has been stood for a couple of years and the F1 light appeared after 30 miles.
Erratic idle and dash flashing like a good

More than likely a fuel pump issue, old fuel etc, anyway it's gone back to the dealership for investigation.

I did however manage to go get the feel for the bike in general and must admit, what a great little thing, Yes its underpowered or better described as a very linear power delivery but I was on mid morning wet cold roads and to be fair it was perfect,no fear of the back stepping out.
You're not going to be doing 70-80 mph overtakes on a motorway although It will do it but not quickly. A and B roads are absolutely spot on for the bike, no issues on bypass riding feels very planted.
Not tried it 2 up yet.
The motor is actually quite peppy and responsive, certainly doesn't hesitate to rev out and it's very smooth.
Handles really well although I couldn't push it, tad soft but not unruly, very comfy and very neutral riding position for my 5'7 height.

First impressions: really great little bike and I can't believe they didn't take off in the UK, in my opinion put against a RE Himalayan it's far more advanced and better quality all round, running gear, brakes, engine, just feels like Suzuki are offering a genuine little big bike and didn't really go budget ,well it certainly doesn't feel like that, however that's subjective and only my thoughts.

I'll report back with pics once its in my possession again and hopefully get some more miles on it to have a real test.

Finally got the bike back, after it had to go back to the dealership.

All sorted now though.
First proper chance I've had to get out on it.

Quick 50 mile trip around the Cheshire countryside, very wet but managed to dodge a few showers.
All in all ,I would say, what a cracking little bike. So easy to ride, very neutral riding position, doesn't feel like a 250 when you are riding it, until you open it up obviously, yes it's not powerful but to be honest for today's ride its an absolute joy.
The engine has only done 2000 and hardly run in, it's as responsive as you'd expect but also doesn't fade away up hill, we have a local test run with Kelsall hill as a key part, if it'll go up there at 70 and hold it, it's doing OK, and it did.
The motor is extremely sweet and quiet and very willing to rev.
It handles better than I expected, I wasn't expecting much from the Road winner tyres but they've actually surprised me, it was all wet riding this morning and they didn't faulter.
I got a little squirmy in the seat after an hour, probably a combination of me not ridden for a few weeks and was a tad stiff riding a new bike and also the bike hasn't been ridden in 3 years so the padding is fairly firm, quick stop at J and S motorcycles ,I jumped back on and didn't really notice any discomfort at all,I only did around 10 more miles though.
Quality wise, its very well finished, everything is well positioned, motor feels quality with slick gear changes, running gear is spot on, screen is great.

A very good little big bike, ideal second bike for me, can see me having a bit of fun on it.
And with the way the UK speed restrictions are in place, I'll probably use it more than I think. For the type of riding I now mainly do.
I'll try it 2 up when it gets a bit warmer, wifey won't go out in the winter.

Unfortunately the bike has been returned to the dealer.
Turns out that the ABS pump has failed and is NOT a serviceable part OR even now available to purchase from Suzuki,Rendering the bike unusable.
Luckily I've ridden it within the warranty period and Bigmoto have my been absolutely incredible, their service has been exemplary and they couldn't have possibly done anymore for me.
I would definitely recommend Bigmoto from my experience.
Didn't really want a 650 as it was only going to be a light weight winter hack bit of fun thing as well as my other bike.

Damn , at least the dealer is playing nice , some good news .  Any thoughts on what  bike next , to replace it , if at all ? , spring is a coming'

Makes me wonder , what are the legal ramifications of taking off the abs completely . Would it MOT ? , the insurance , if informed on a custom policy ,  should be doable .  Is someone handy with the spanners going to offer your dealer a pittance to take it away ...is what I am thinking

ABS pump delete / removal, is a fairly common occurrence with certain models of Beemer.

I think you can even buy a delete kit from MotorWorks.
The older I get, the better I was.

Good to know  :thumb:
Is that just for models that were introduced before abs became compulsory in 2016/7
On the 250 above it would have been compulsory not just an option , part of type approval ? Not sure how that would effect things ?
I do know the abs isn't tested in an MOT , the rolling road goes too slow  to activate it and they have to lock the wheel when testing anyway, but the warning light mustn't be on . The last would probably be easy to sort , but getting it all legal in the advent of a crash...

When the ABS pump failed on my BMW GSA 1150 some years ago removing it was an option and at £1300.00 just for the pump to say nothing of the labour I did consider it. Anyway the pump was replaced but I felt the bike was never going to be my own after that and that I would always be met with ridicules repair bills in future so I got rid of the bike.

Although I was sad to see it go it also felt like a huge relief to have it off my back.  :groan: :thumb:

I think legally you can remove it, but good luck with getting reasonable insurance costs with that modification. It's bad enough getting insurance quotes with minor modifications without removing what they'll see as a critical safety feature.

I did ask my mate, he's an mot inspector.

If it's fitted as standard,it must work and the light must not be on.

The issue is making sure the F1 light doesn't stay on and to be honest, the bike Went into fuel hunting mode, over reving,so not ideal.

I may look at a 650. Not sure if anyone is selling one, Cheshire way???????

Big Moto have two , one in the Cheshire branch  , one down the road from me in East Anglia ...both with ridiculously low miles  The one near me DOESN'T have abs  ...I am sure they would transport it up for you  :thumb: but the one near you has all the right bits on it
Both will move quick , 650s don't tend to stay long on the showroom floor .
I did a quick MOT check and the mileages seem genuine

K9 - my favourite Strom and with less than 5kmiles it's almost new :icon_drool5: If only I wasn't so  :old:  and :icon_crutch: ###
