DL1000 heated grips not working (??)
« on: April 10, 2019, 19:10:52 »
My 2008 (UK) model Suzuki V-Strom DL1000 GT's OEM handlebar heated grips have now stopped working, first time in ten years, does anyone know if there's a fuse to find or replace somewhere on the bike please..? These are not an aftermarket fit, the heated grips were on the motorcycle as standard when I bought it brand new in 2008.
I don't own a volt meter to check things.

I've had a look under the riders seat and checked the main fuses but there doesn't seem to be a dedicated fuse located there for the heated grips.

Any advice welcome.

Regards;

I think its the same fuse for the turn signals and tail-lamp? (fuse number 5, 15 amp?) Are they working? If they are, it's probably the internals on the grips, or the controller. Outside chance it might just be poor contact (with age, moisture etc) in the connector under the tank?

Cheers.

Yes, both indicators and tail lamp and brake light working fine.

Does the engine need to be running for the grips to heat up?

I don't believe so, Peter, as I had a powerpoint/ cig lighter socket wired up to that oem grips connector, and it would work with the ignition on only.
10 years is a decent life-span for heated grips - both the controllers and internals of the grips themselves are notorious for failing (all makes of HG's). As the oem Suzy ones are wired in series, then both tend to fail at once. Hopefully it's just a connector though, good luck

Cheers...

Strange thing is I went to start my Suzuki this morning and the battery was completely dead, no ignition lights.....nothing, it's never done that in the ten years I've owned it, so I connected the battery up to an Optimate battery charger for 5 hours and it held the charge and started up OK and went out on a decent 80 mile ride.

Strange....
