I bought an Ambulance
« on: August 14, 2018, 21:54:21 »
Hello I have bought a patient transfer ambulance, the place I bought it from sent their part of the log book off to put it in my name, while waiting for the log book to be returned ( 3 weeks) I contacted dvla to see what I had to do to change from a ambulance to a PLG van, and was told I had to remove the stickers/ transfers send pictures to prove this had been done and return the log book back to them with section 7 filled in with the new information ie van and PLG, so I send it all off with a covering letter stating what I wanted to do, well a couple of weeks past still nothing then went on holiday for a week, on my return they had sent the log book back with a letter saying they were unable to process my request at this time for the following reason I did not enclose the required rate of duty either £540 for 12 months or £297 for 6 months, at this point I rang the dvla once I finally got to speak to someone I wanted to know for one why wasn't I told I needed to send the fee to tax the vehicle just a waste of time and secondly why was it going to be that much to tax!!!! And was told the vehicle has a co2 figure of 229g/km and apparently that's how they work out the tax fee, once I had calmed down a bit I asked what we can do to get it down rated to normal rate for a 3500 kg van which is £240 for 12 months, and was told the vehicle category was M1 which are used for the carriage of passengers of no more than 8 passengers in addition to the drivers seat, I have tried to explain that I only wanted to use it now as a van as I bought it to carry my motorbikes bacause of the ramp, but at the moment we are in stalemate they are saying that it is not possible to change this vehicle from the M1 category, sorry I have gone on a bit but just wanted to know if anyone on here has had any dealings with this type of situation any help in this mater would be very helpful.

About 20 years ago the company I worked for bought a couple of GMC ambulances. The sineage was replaced with MASS Engineering-Bus Paramedics. We managed to get the blues working again but we changed the lenses to orange ones. I used it at weekends to ferry my TTR to the Peak District, luckily I always filled it up at the depot, the thirst of the 6.7L V8 diesel was legendary. We didn't change the use status and I recommend neither do you.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Thanks for your reply TL power, I have had another call from the dvla saying I have to ring dvsa which used to be vosa which I done and was told to change the category I would have to have a iva examination which is £580 but then that means the tax fee would be £240 for the year so if I kept the van for a few years it would pay for it self, I am still not sure what to do for the best ?
