Forum Nanny state....
« on: April 01, 2018, 18:25:47 »
Is it possible to remove big brother from this forum?

It's annoying that it won't let you write what you want to write. The auto-correct is intrusive at times.
We are rational adults, we really don't need a forum big brother changing our words for us, do we?

Seeing as Big Brother owns and runs the place, I'd say not a chance. Better to learn to have a bit of fun with it. Even BB gets caught out, "water arse" springs to mind

If what you want to write is some American bollocks, then no.

Nope, just tried to write g.u.y. and the forum adjusted it to "bloke" which made the sentence read badly, so I didn't post.

I find it a charming quirk, it also encourages me to read thoroughly before posting. :)

I'm amazed you've not spotted this before, Rich. All the Bloke Martin, Bloke Fawkes, bloke ropes comments. Hello ho is another. It's just something we work with or work round. When my dad worked for the Bishop of Wakefield I edited his Ms Word dictionary to auto correct the word "Bishop" and replace it with "Hippopotamus". That was more of a nuisance than FR's Anglicising of our posts, I reckon.

The removal of Americanisms is to differentiate this forum from the USA based version.
Sinner that I sometimes am I aspire to write and speak English. I accept, nay, I appreciate corrections to my frequent deficiencies and omissions.
Look at the clock and the calendar.
It'll never be now again.
So just get out and do it.
As fast as you possibly can.

It's not so much to differentiate this site from an American site, it's just that British and English people using the American version (mutilation) of the English language pisses me off.

I see people greeting each other with the word 'hay', then there is that g word (what possible use could you have for that unless you are referring to bloke Fawkes, bloke Ropes or bloke Martin (see, it is funny)?

Having a strop and saying you won't post because of it is also very funny.

I'm tired of explaining it, if you don't like it, piss offfff to Facetwit  :thumb:

OK, I'm going nowhere.

Seriously FR why is this site American based and needs to be 'corrected'? I agree with you totally over nasty non-English etc. etc.

If it's the best version, has all the bits but comes from the States.......... then OK. (You could say it's a V-Strom and I'd understand but it's from Japan)

BTW, it's worse on FB...........

Not having a strop, not saying I won't post... Just saying I didn't post because it changed my post and made it sound odd.
I'm not sure why you've interpreted it that way to be honest.

However I see you are not open to change so there's nothing more to say really, it's your forum and it's run how you want it. Clarification received and understood.

lol It is all just good old-fashioned quirky British humour, really. There have been some genuinely (accidentally) funny posts created through it. I personally view it as an eccentricity and accept it as a sort of reflection of Fat Rat's own eccentricities

And if it annoys some folk, sometimes - well, it's a small price to pay for an otherwise fairly free-wheeling forum with otherwise very little regulation! :)

PS: it has annoyed the f*** out of me at times, too :lala: lol

Are you suggesting I am eccentric Dave? The people at my therapy group voted me the most normal one there.

I am easy to work out, if you are English or British don't use Americansims, also don't ask a shopkeeper if you can 'get' something. Simples.

The "get" thing puzzles me... my kids use it and it's certainly not something they've learnt from me or Mrs HB; I can only assume it's come from some American sitcom such as "Friends" (they were both avid viewers, but fortunately not in my presence) - they've also taken to ordering ("Can I get a...?") such abominations as "a frapuccino". What's wrong with "a coffee" or, better, a "cup of tea"?
