£25 [edit: now April 2015 £27.00 posted] I will include 3 blade fuses too if you tell me what values you want, along with the other end of the bullet connectors to crimp on to your accessories power leads.

Plugs in just under the tank and will power your accessories when the ignition is on.

Can make more to order.

Thanks

Excellent value, similar items on the BMW forums are offered at double this price.
What do the trigger wires connect to, to activate the powering relay?
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on October 24, 2014, 12:36:10
there's a connector just under the tank, it is for the tail light.

I'll have one too.

Do you need to remove the tank to find the switch plug?
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on October 24, 2014, 20:24:44
Nope, I just prop it up on the prop and the plug is visible. Locals are welcome to collect and have a hand plugging it in.

EDIT Glasgow is not local :D I can do an install video if it would help.

A neat looking job.

Something to consider for the mkII is make the Black (0V) crimp connectors male, saves any accidents if connecting polarity conscious equipment.

Assuming the end user is not colour blind  :)

It's also a widely accepted convention to wire connectors like that.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on October 27, 2014, 11:08:28
OK, if that is convention I'll do so in the future.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: Mr B on October 27, 2014, 17:06:48
Yes, convention says that the power carrying end of a cable is female and insulated. Automobiles and aircraft are all this way.
Think about sockets and plugs in your house. Stops the user getting electrocuted!

Post by: greywolf on October 28, 2014, 19:23:12
The relay trigger wire connection looks to be for the wires to the rear brake light switch. One wire would be live with the ignition on and the other would be live when the brake light is on.The relay trigger wire would be connected to the former. That's a neat little package.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on October 28, 2014, 19:31:33
Yep, correct. It is connected to the tail light side of the connector.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: greywolf on October 28, 2014, 21:03:58
I'd say both sides as there are connector halves at each end to bridge the stock connector. However it is termed, it is a great place to find a connector with an ignition switched wire to trigger a relay. The wire colors even match my favorite wiring diagram for the process.

Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on October 28, 2014, 21:31:38
Yea, this connects between the 2 plugs, so no connection is broken and a feed is taken to activate the relay.

Depends on what you are after some are like chickens teeth unless you want over a 1000 units and others readily available. For the GPI connectors have been trial and error for example.

I modded one of these headlight relay kits for my K5 Wee, just had to shorten some cables.

Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on October 29, 2014, 18:42:39
that's cheaper than I could do them for, I was pricing up the parts earlier, I'd be looking at £40ish unfortunately. Although the relays I'd use would be smaller ones than with that kit, the strom has plenty of space in that area.

I've always used kojaycat.co.uk and autoelectricsupplies.co.uk for connectors, takes a bit of hunting to get the connector you're after.

I've not specifically sourced Suzuki connectors, so can't guarantee you'll find what you want,  but I've changed every connector on a 350lc loom with like for like without too much trouble.

On most later model Wees and all Glees, there is also a coolant bottle under the rear tank support that has to be moved out of the way.

Hello big pie
I've hooked up a couple of twin spot lights to the aux fuse box but I'm a bit miffed at having to run each one from a separate slot! I only have 1 slot left for my heated grips and I have a charging port to refit.
Would I be able to run both sets of lights into 1 fuse slot and up the size of the fuse?
the lights are 55 watts each!
Do you have any suggestions how to run the 2 into 1?

Cheers

Tony
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on November 10, 2014, 21:34:29
Positive from both lights to one red output negative from both to one black output. 110 watta at 12v is just under 10 amps. Each output is wired for 21amps but the total across the 3 outputs needs to remain under 30 amps.

Another thumbs up for Bigpie's Aux Fusebox!  :thumb:

Highly recomended and easy to fit, even for someone cack-handed like me.   Biggest problem was removing the plastics, as my connector had vanished into the innards of my bike.  :bawl:

Doubled up on Kirky's LED running lights, properly wired up my 12v external socket for sat-nav and finally got power to my rear Givi top-box light.  :lala:  (Bigpie, I'm going to use my Optimate charge lead for heated gear, just waiting for payday.  :violin: )

Thanks for all the help Bigpie AND the blades fitted the Speedohealer as well!!  :thumb:   :thumb:
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on November 13, 2014, 09:47:56
You could run  couple of sets of Kirky lights from one output quite easily if you wanted. You can also chain another fusebox if you want more outputs in the future, they click together.

Glad the pins fit too, I've been thinking about taking on the speedo healer challenge next year. Intercept the hall effect sensor signal and modify it, I suspect I'll not get chance to investigate for quite some time.

Post by: Jay2 on November 14, 2014, 17:51:36
Cheers Bigpie,

Got the older V3 Speedhealer and still trying to set it up properly, as it works by a combinations of switches, with the pattern worked out by an on-line calculator.  Think the newer version is a bit easier to set-up.

If you need to have a look at one then just let us know and can always pop round.  :thumb:

Hello bigpie,

I am thinking with all the accessories one can plug in to the fuse box I.e., Heated jacket heated grips, GPS, front + rear running lights etc, etc, will the battery/charging system be able to cope?
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: greywolf on November 15, 2014, 18:49:48
You have a 400W output of which about 125W-150W are available for extra electrical accessories. Check the total wattage of your added items. A heat controller will reduce the draw of the heated gear when full heat is not needed. Unplugging or adding a switch to turn off one headlight will make another 55W available for heat when riding in daylight.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on November 15, 2014, 20:12:02
The Kirky running lights and GPS will draw very little, my heated vest is only about 18 watts according to Keis and grips about 30 watts so plenty of scope left for me, unless you are running powerful fog lights and heated gear I'd imagine you'd be the same too. As Greywolf says, you could disable one of the headlights in the day if you require more.

Hello Bigpie,

Just a quick query from an electrical numpty, what individual fuse rating would you suggest with your fusebox if running Kirky's LED's on one and a 12v socket for a SatNav on another?

Cheers
Jay
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on November 17, 2014, 18:01:44
I'd go for the 2 amp on the Kirky lights, you'd get away with 1 amp but we've both over rated the wiring. I'd go with a 5 on the 12v incase you plug something like a compressor in it, otherwise a 2 should be more than enough.

Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: greywolf on November 23, 2014, 21:00:12
I guess I should have said "should be wired" instead of "are wired" because it could be construed they come that way. If you want them to come on at the same time, wire them together as stated and feed them from one source.

Did you fit two brackets for each light?
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: Twiggy on November 27, 2014, 22:26:19
I did fit 2 per light. I also put double sided tape on the clips on one side and the sponge foam tape on the other one. Purely to see which works best. Once I've decided I'll swap them both to that.
I taped them because they move a bit. I'm thinking of  adapting a jubilee clip with a rubber back to fit them to the conduit clips so I can tighten them properly without tape.

Received the Aux fuse box today, thank you very much, now I will wait for the lights and with any luck and watching videos I will be able to fit them.
Showed the fuse box to some work mates who are Beemer riders even they were very impressed.

Apologies for delay in posting some feedback. Very pleased with the quality of the kit build that you've put together here and the speed at which you got it out to me :thumb: .

Easy as 'Pie' to fit too! No need to worry any longer about the heated grips being accidently left on and now have options for maybe either a heated vest, intercom etc. Decisions, decisions......

Twiggy - how did you feed the cables through the plastic side wall? Big enough hole for fuse holder and splice plug, or disconnect cables from relay holder? Can't see from pics.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: Twiggy on December 26, 2014, 17:30:31

I drilled a hole for the cable and sliced down to it. When I've wired everything else in I'll glue it back together, although I was thinking of some thin black conduit. I change my mind a lot so the conduit looks more likely!

Being a smart arse and a tight arse, I thought I could use my GCSE in D&T Electronics to make myself a set of these.

Seriously... what it cost me in parts, time, solder, burns and the mrs complaining of the smell of flux in the living room I should have just bought the things from BigPie!

Took sodding ages to figure out a way to wire it neatly and the over an hour to make one, then another 2 hours to redo all the wiring on the bike to suit the new layout.  :GRR:

In the end you get a nice neat bit of kit... but god was it a PITA to make.
Quite robust base with a few mounting options.

How you can sit there with your little production line going is beyond me. 2 was enough for me to do in one lifetime.

Got a bit of a system going, and I make at least 10 at a time, though it is a bit of a struggle to fit in my job, my software development business and making the electronic bits and bobs, general house duties, being a dad and trying get an allotment plot in to shape.

Luckily I struggle to be able to sit still and do nothing, but as we come out of winter I will be doing less of the electrical bits and bobs and I do hope that one day my software business can take over from the software job.

Here  is  a picture of the mess I inherited (apart from the Sat Nav feed) that I am planning to tidy up with my newly bought Aux fuse box (a thing of beauty I'm sure you'll all agree). Suprisingly I have recently had a lot of issues with the Alarm refusing to disarm which I think may be down to the iffy connectors (bits of rubbish)

Sorry GW, I still couldn't live with that. It's the gaffer tape. Bleh... Pre-insulated terminals (the ones with the red, blue or yellow crimped on ends) always look like a bodged repair that stand out like a turd on a snooker table at the side of the manufacturer terminals. I never feel comfortable trusting if the quality of the joint, as it is hidden under the plastic sleeve. Yes, I know it works acceptably and yes, I know I have mental problems but I feel better now as I can admit it to myself that I have wiring ocd! :)

Solder, solder, solder and heat shrink. Simples.  :)
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: greywolf on February 14, 2015, 01:12:49
I was trying to win the prize for messiest wiring. I always start with good intentions but lose patience. The only saving grace is it's perfectly functional. The gaffers tape has nothing to do with the electrical stuff. The pouch containing the air compressor and extra tools wore through and tools started to leave so the pouch got taped over. An alternative to the ring terminal wire ends on the bus bars would be nice but that's what the local electronics store had that would work.

A series rectifier regulator wired to the battery through a 30A automotive circuit breaker, Rostra cruise control, Datel voltmeter, Warm & Safe dual heated gear-controller, HotGrips, GPS over dash mount, single headlight cutoff switch, relay and PC8 fuse block, Stebel horn, garage door opener, cigarette lighter type socket, earbuds with jacks wired to bike for Garmin Zumo 550, headlight relays, SpeedoDRD speedometer corrector, and a relay triggered by the brake light circuit that cuts off the heated gear when the brake light is on require a lot of wire and relays.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: Hondaman on February 14, 2015, 05:51:41
And you actually need all that stuff GW!
I'm particularly bemused by the brake light activated heated clothing cut off :)

After years of trying to make messy wiring look neat, I've come to the conclusion that the less stuff added to a bike the better!
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: greywolf on February 14, 2015, 06:22:50
When I stop at a traffic light on a cold day, I often get too hot as the wind chill goes away. I can use the front brake to control the heat without changing the heat control level which is correct when moving. I may not need all I installed, but I like having it and it makes my ride more enjoyable.

I applaud GW for that - if I tried adding all of that to my bike I'd probably have a smouldering wreck in the garage. I think my wiring isn't too bad to be honest, everything works and it's reasonably tidy. Got space to add a few extra items with minimal effort if needed.

(Only got heated grips, heated jacket, aux socket and stebel snail horns installed)

The area where the tool kit normally resides now has a Rostra cruise control servo, PC8 fuse block, Dynaplug tyre plug kit and garage door opener. It's the only place the Rostra would fit. The main under seat tray has the tape reinforced pouch with an air compressor, a socket tool set and some of the tools from the stock tool kit. The stock tool kit pouch with some of the tools is in the right side cover. If more room is needed, the luggage goes on.

Disconnect the battery then trace the wires, there are normally 2 pairs that break into the ignition, fuelling etc., remove them a pair at a time and rejoin the existing loom wire with solder and heatshrink.
There will also be wires to power, ground & indicators, these can just be cut and insulated.

All the above depends on the alarm make, model etc., if you're not confident with auto electrics your local bike shop will have experience of removing alarms.

Anybody fitted one of Bigpies brilliant box of tricks to a different bike than a V-Strom?

Would make alot neater job on my other bike, presume just need to splice into a 'live' when ignition on?  Such as tail-light?

If you have another bike then these are great as well, saves hacking your wiring to pieces, just fitted one to my VFR to sort an aux power socket and some heated gear.

Just cut the connectors off for the Strom wiring, find a 'live' when ignition on, (rear light), splice in and jobs a good'en.

Just like to add I fitted mine in about 5 mins max. Didn't need to lift tank, nimble fingers required but do-able.

Heated grips here I come (now the weathers turned nice :) ), also got plans to fit a louder horn and refit my running lights.

I have been running my autocom off the aux socket inside the fairing, 15k miles without issue so will leave it there.

I'll do some research of my own. The rear light is a popular switch wire same as the strom but I'm not sure if the plug method that I like on the strom is possible.

Do you know what "knocked up" means in American? I'll give you a hint.

A pregnant woman was crossing the street against the light in New York City and a cab came to a screeching halt inches from her. The driver yelled, "Hello lady, are you trying to get knocked down too".

Nope, the relay cuts the battery connection when the ignition is off, something like an optimiser will want to go directly to he battery

Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: biglad on November 06, 2015, 22:19:45
I've just made a start to mine (2013 Glee) and it  was a bit tricky to find..

Mine is underneath the rear of the coolant tank slightly towards the right hand side of the bike.

To get to it I had to swing the tank support out of the way (take one bolt out, loosen the other  and swing it to one side. There is also a bundle of wires which were tied together with a rubber cable tie. I loosened the cable tie to give some wiggle room.

The bodywork was a pita to get off...that took an age to do- conscious not to break any fixings or grommets..one or two might have suffered an injury but Hello ho. I've also dropped one of the tank support bolts.  Had a quick look and a fish with the magnet and couldn't get it. I'll find it tomorrow when I can see in the daylight.

I've got the box wired up so I can start on the accessories. I take it the best way is to run the cables for grips under the tank? The lights will come in at the side panels.

that's me all done and the bike back together. Fitted the cree led lights and dr bike heated grips.. took me about 4 hours from start to finish but that's my first electrical job so maybe not too bad. Had some fun and games along the way but all done now!!

Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: Cam on November 07, 2015, 21:33:51
Well, that was a bit more effort than I expected! Finally found the connector — it was taped up right underneath the main set of cabling going across the front of the coolant reservoir — and after lifting the tank and taking the reservoir off its mount and getting it out the way, I got the signal connector attached. Got the pos/neg wires attached to the battery (along with battery tender wiring) and tank, reservoir, panels, and seat all back in place. Probably about 4 hours all in. No disasters!

Tomorrow I will attach the Oxford heated grips to the aux fusebox …
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: biglad on November 07, 2015, 22:02:41
Good to hear you got there in the end.

Just reading you have put the bike back together; did you run the cable for the heated grips between the handlebars and the fuse box underneath the tank while you had the bike open? If not, I think the easiest way to do it is to remove the left side tank panel, loosen the bolt at the rear of the tank  and I think you should have enough wiggle room to slide it in. The tricky point is where a rubber on the bottom of the tank rests on the frame.

I was messing around with a switch for my lights and decided to live with them being on all the time before changing my mind.. however this was after I had the  bike almost back rogether which meant trying to get the cable in with minimal disturbance.

BTW, I had one black bolt left over from the rebuild- partially threaded, about M8 thread and 30mm long. There was only one of this type of bolt. Any ideas where its from?

Got the heated grips in this evening. Struggled with the connectors ( hadn't used those type before and had bought the wrong crimping tool), and realised I needed a bigger value fuse than the supplied 2A ones and found some in the local garage which saved a trip across town to the 24 hour Tesco. Seems to work fine so thanks again for the cold product! :-)

Nice one, thanks for the pics. First one to my knowledge on the new 1000. I've got a pair of those lights coming.

Big Pie, I presume lights are CREE U5 lights - http://www.banggood.com/CREE-U5-Motorcycle-LED-Headlight-Waterproof-High-Power-Spot-Light-p-941300.html

Can you let me/us know how good/bad lights are and how you can bypass the mode switching?

Cheers

P.S. Aux fusebox is great -  makes everything neater!

Those lights look identical to mine, and judging  by the questions asked at the bottom of the page, they are. I've got  a handlebar mounted switch and each time you turn the lights on and off, it cycles into the next mode. (Hello / Lo / Strobe). Bit of a nuisance, but no real issue. Just before I switch the bike off I switch the lights on and off twice, so the next time I turn them on, it comes onto Hello beam. There's a link on a thread in the accessories forum about soldering inside the lamp to disable the lo & strobe modes, but given this was my first 'proper' electrical job, I'll leave them alone and live with cycling through the modes....

The banggood lights was easy to disable the 3 modes. The circuit board in mine was labeled as tw-713h-v4 and I just removed the whole IC labeled U2. Now I just have high beam. I can post after photos if anyone needs them.

Impressed  :) :) :)
Got it (partially) installed, it took me longer to find the connector it than it did to wire it in :-O

Needed to push pull wiggle the existing wiring. Also had to remove the reservoir briefly to give me enough room. Anyway, Sat Nav installed - I don't really like the wiring route (I've'e got a Cymarc bracket so the Garmin is above the instruments) so wire trailing down on the R/H side, not elegant but functional!!

Anyway, spotlights over the next couple of days and maybe red led bullets to 'use' the last connection on the fuse box.

ps the Sat Nav worked fine..... after I remembered to install the 2nd fuze - Doh !!

Buggeration!!! Whilst installing the fuse box I musta disturbed the wiring of my (dealer installed) cig charge socket wiring!!! Its always been a bit 'flaky' and I've'e had to fiddle to get the plug connected properly (usually mini tyre inflater.) Its also in a rather inconvenient place - so as I have already drilled the top plastic panel for the spot light switch, I think I'll pull it and replace and re-locate the/a socket to the panel.

Still v happy with fuse box though and all acc's fully functional :-)
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: kwarr on November 26, 2015, 17:24:39
I know this is prob now in the wrong thread...but  the cheapo eBbay spots I added draw too much current cos there's not enough ummmph to power the heated grips if the spots are on!!!!
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on November 26, 2015, 18:28:52
What heated grips do you have and which spots?
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: kwarr on November 26, 2015, 20:09:08
Dealer installed Suzuki oem when I bought the bike (Oct 2011, 2012 model). However.... I suspect that (like the cig charger socket) they might NOT be Suzuki!!!
lights were 'cheapish' £35. "Universal Fog / Spot Lights Ideal For Kawasaki GTR 1400 / KLE 650 / 1000 Versys".
to be honest - they are obviously from China, horrible mounting brackets, and I stripped one thread on the body, and I hardly did the nut up!! Also they are very big, so I had already bought some replacement LED spots from BikeVis in anticipation....

Also added some BikeVis rear red bullets to the third feed from the fusebox. All works hunky dory, so very pleased with the fuse box. Happy days. :lala: :lala: :lala: :lala:

Veeks have the same connector under the rear of the tank. The wire colors are a bit different. White/green plus white/black on the main loom side of the connector and orange plus white/black of the rear brake light switch side.

And k8 Vee? Which one is it and what wire colours?

Post by: bigpie on March 24, 2016, 20:17:24
It's in the same place on all bike afaik, just under the back of the tank, possibly behind the coolant bottle if you have ABS. It is a white wire with a black tracer and an orange one.

Switched live is mainly orange for all other models (mainly white on the Veek only) with a green stripe feeding switched power to the rear brake light switch and white with a black stripe to the brake lights. The switch connects those two wires to turn the brake lights on when the ignition is on and the rear brake light switch is closed. There is another switch for the front brake.

Hello. Sorry all out now. I'll probably make up some more in a month or so. Got another project on at the moment, thanks to Earthcore. Building a electric bike for the little one, but after that I'll be making up some more.

A bit faffy, but quite pleased the way my little install worked out in the end. Sat Nav and usb charger all sorted with one space spare.

Hello, do you use only bullet connector or can you use other type? The accessories are all switched, is it correct? I  will connect the heated grip, cree U7 directly to your fuse box? in your opinion the brake light GIVI e135 will be connected to the fuse box or it is not convenient?
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on September 24, 2016, 08:46:01
It has no way of triggering a brake light, every connection on it is live with the ignition. A brake light I would wire to a relay separate.

The connectors can be replaced with what ever you like. RC car battery type for example.

Installed mine a few weeks ago, had sat on the side for a few weeks. Installed it as part of a full service with the tank off etc. Think on my K7 it might have been a little difficult to reach the brake light plug otherwise. Works great, no more worries about leaving my heated grips on :D Have been suffering a lot lately with the loss of headlights and have to prod the starter a few times to get them to come back on. Will be giving the switch a clean/grease this weekend, hopefully that'll sort it for now but I think I'll be placing an order for a relay kit if they're available big pie? Cheers

Just a suggestion Bp, couldn't you link two units together with 1 relay.
Another option would be to wire 1 output into another say 3 or 4 way fusebox available V cheaply or just run 2 items off 1 fuse.

Not wishing to hijack just throwing some alternative ideas out there.

Thanks BP. Fitted my aux fusebox today, really simple even for a complete novice like me. it seems on the newer bikes that Suzuki cable tie the wires to the frame near the white connection that is required for the feed, it makes it a bit more difficult but still a fairly easy job. Connected to the battery, fuse in and usb socket live for charging satnav and mobile phone :lala: Excellent piece of kit would highly recommend. All I need now is some decent weather so I can go out and use it, maybe this weekend(if the weather people have got it right). :sunny:

Finally got round to taking some pics of my aux fuse box. It's was very simple to install (and I'm new to biking and with zero experience of electrics!) and made additional accessories even simpler again. Below is my rather untidy (but not heinously so) example and the USB and 12v outlets I've attached through the box. I'm planning on reinstalling the outlets either side of the dash on the flat vertical faces of the plastic, where they won't interfere with the handlebars.

I know this is kind of the wrong place to be posting this, but I'm finally taking the plunge and am trying to wire up my BigPie Fusebox.  Thing is, I ordered up some automotive cable to connect to my accessories; I assumed 11 amp would be adequate, but the stuff I've ended up with (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321878307823 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321878307823)) just looks really puny compared to all the other cabling on the bike.  I need the fusebox currently for powering a satnav, USB/cig charging socket, and some a pair of auxilliary running lights (and likely in future for heated grips.

Have I screwed up?  :dl_smiley_banghead:
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: Fat Rat on May 20, 2017, 18:36:15
A cable rated at 11A (based on 13.8V DC) would cope with 150 Watts. What are you looking to run from it?
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on May 20, 2017, 18:52:04
I use massively overrated cable on the fuseboxes. My heated gear doesn't even pull 11amps all together. You should be able to use that cable for most accessories
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: Freddyfruitbat on May 20, 2017, 20:45:23
Thanks BP, much appreciated - I thought I'd checked my rating correctly but this stuff just looks so... flimsy. Anyway, I'll crack on.

I located the orange rear light cable on my Glee that I needed to tap into, but even having raised the fuel tank the plug was right down deep below the coolant bottle, really tight with no slack at all, and I could barely even get my finger tips down there.  Is that normal?!  Almost certain it's OEM Suzuki.   I eventually managed to get the connection made, but it was really tricky and took me ages and much cussing!

Can I give you one bit of constructive feedback on the design?  For the Glee, at least, it would be good to have another inch of cable between the inline fuse, to make routing that cable easier if you want the fusebox in the space by the coolant bottle, as it's a bit limiting (see another punter's photo at http://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=24607.msg317497#msg317497 (http://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=24607.msg317497#msg317497)).

Fitted my aux fusebox today. Worth every penny and highly recommend getting one. Only issue was the switched live feed connector on my bike was buried deep in the guts of the engine bay. Once I'd moved the coolant expansion bottle out of the way it was just about reachable. Would have been easier with girlie hands, not the two shovels I was born with ;-)

Hello bigpie...

I fitted one of your fuseboxes a few months back - at that point it was just powering my SatNav - and I carefully stashed away the extra connectors you provided, ready for when I'd be installing some heated grips.   Which happened today.

And as you've guessed, I now have no idea where the spare connectors are, so need to source some replacements!  I know bugger all about automotive electrics and don't know if yours are completely standard items - I found these online, are these right?   As in, will they just connect to your existing male and female connectors and sleeves without me having to rewire everything?   If  not - what am I looking for?

Fitted mine today ... piece of cake apart from getting at the trigger (Brakelight) connection under the tank; like others, I'm blessed with shovels not little girlie hands!. But it's done, and the heated grips are working nicely. Auxiliary lighting's next on the agenda, and there are two "proper" feeds now available. Thanks, BigPie, for this useful and well-crafted item.

Hotbulb what have you used to fasten the fusebox to the battery tray? I was going to drill through the same place that's all
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: hotbulb on October 24, 2017, 15:28:23
Following someone else's suggesting, having drilled a hole near the base of the tray for the cables to exit I cut, with a sharp knife (carefully!) a slit downfrom the edge to the hole.  To fix the actual fuse/relay unit in place I used a small nut and bolt through another hole , and a couple of "penny" washer to close the slit -  I may try plastic-welding  the slit with a soldering iron later.

Not wanting to use up precious space in the underseat storage compartment, my BigPieAuxBox sits in the little space immediately in front of the bike's own fusebox, held loosely in position by a cable tie around both.  Not ideal but works...!

Is the connector on the K7 Vee in the same place under the rear of the tank as it is on the Wee?
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: P248 on March 20, 2018, 18:33:47
I found the relevant connector on my Vee. It’s under the back of the tank and I was able to access it without unbolting or lifting the tank or anything else. I’ve now installed Bigpie’s fuse box. I’d post photos but I can’t work out how to do it. Sorry.

It’s a lovely bit of kit, but I’d like to waterproof it somehow. It needs some sort of tight rubber cover that can be stretched over it. A condom would work perfectly (!), but before I resort to that I’ll do some research for less risqué alternatives. I won’t push my luck by asking for suggestions!
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on March 20, 2018, 18:56:39
It should be fine under the seat, Christ knows what accident investigation will think you're up to if you're unlucky enough and they find a black box in a condom.

Any more interested? I've had a pm, so if there's more interested I'll get some more made up. No condoms included.

The Vee doesn’t have a coolant bottle under the tank (at least mine doesn’t) which probably makes it easier to get at the connector.

It's hard to see from the photos but it sounds right, they're easier to get to on some bikes and if you have small hands. Put the fusebox connector between them.

The wires are orange and a black/white. See https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rear-Brake-Light-Switch-for-2005-Suzuki-DL-650-K5-V-Strom-/391254890382

Now trying to fit Sat Nav wires plugged into unit done turn on power not charging but if I attach wires from satnav direct to battery it charges
I removed the 2amp fuse from original inline and  plug into new unit nothing any help please
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: tallpaul on April 24, 2018, 10:47:01
Gary, that fuse is physically too small for the socket. It isn't able to touch both terminals. Go to BMS across road from the big Tesco on Huddersfield road and ask them for blade fuses. They should be able to help. :fix: :thumb:

Don't forget to fit a fuse in the main inline fuse holder too. Your pic above shows you have no fuse in there. The inline fuse needs to be about 10 amp but the individual fuses from the relay need to rated suitable to the item it is feeding.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: Gary lad on April 24, 2018, 11:27:59
Hello Paul
This 2amp blade is from the inline fuse holder original wire so put this back in there get that but don’t know which blade fuse I have to put in the unit not good with electric
You still near me if struggling ha just seen your profile you moved
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: tallpaul on April 24, 2018, 11:55:10
Sorry mate, I moved away last year. I would have been round to help if I was still over there. The 2 amp fuse in the inline holder will be OK for running a Sat Nav on its own. You will also need a 2 amp fuse  in the fuse holder with the relay in your second pic.

Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: hotbulb on May 10, 2018, 08:43:49
I'm sure BigPie will answer for himself, but, as a happy user of one of his splendid devices, I'd say that it can be used one more or less any bike - it's just a question of locating a suitable "trigger feed", for example the rear light circuit. BP's box is particularly easy for us Strom people as he's provided the correct connector to suit Mr Suzuki's wiring loom, avoiding the need to splice into existing wiring.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on May 10, 2018, 09:03:08
As above really. I don't have access to a mt09 to find a suitable connectior to make it plug and play.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: Paz324 on May 10, 2018, 09:36:39
I thought as much but its no problem I know where the rear light connection is and have no issues with splicing into it, so I'd be happy to buy a DIY fusebox without the bike specific connections plus another for myself.

think I may need 2 as I have 5 outputs: horn (soundbomb), jacket, spots, satnav/phone and autocom/radio.....whilst some of these have low draw and I could double up but I want them separate....makes sense?

Any thoughts?
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: tallpaul on September 30, 2018, 09:28:07
I wouldn't bother wiring  heated clothing through a relay, just connect it to the battery. The idea with a relay controlled supply is you cut the power to the auxiliary devices when you leave the bike, so they are not using power when the ignition is switched off. By default you will be wearing any heated clothing when you leave the bike, so you will have to to unplug it from the bike anyway.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on September 30, 2018, 09:53:23
I don't have any made up at the moment. As TP says, I wouldn't and don't connected my heated vest and gloves through it.

I would also assume your horn uses a relay as it'll draw more than the stock horn and it'll only draw when the button is pressed so can go direct to the battery too.

Hello Bigpie,

I finally got around to connecting up my Aux Fuse box. It seems to have gone well, everything works as it should and my hot grips and Satnav switch off when the ignition is switched off - result.

What did you get yourself?
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on January 23, 2019, 23:44:19
I've got an ender 3 and I've made a few parts for my electric trials bike project.

I've designed a pcb that's getting made at the moment with 4 outputs that's going to live in a custom printed enclosure.

I'm running out of things to print that are useful.

Nice enough bit of kit: I've got a Tronxy X3A for larger things (same basic Prusa design) & a little Malyan M200 that covers most of what I need.
I'm trying not to get myself an SLA one, but I do like the level of detail they produce and also just the novelty of watching something solid emerge out of a little pool of resin...

I go through phases of finding a rake of printing jobs to do, then they can fall silent for weeks.

Are you thinking PETG or ABS for the enclosures?
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: bigpie on January 24, 2019, 09:10:06
I've yet to play with ABS, sounds like an enclosure is needed to keep the temperature stable. I'm just using PLA for the moment but I think ABS has the properties I'd be wanting for this project.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: Mr Nick on January 24, 2019, 17:36:46
I would give PETG a try: I've used it quite a bit on items I need to be more durable and/or flexible than PLA gives. It's easier than ABS to work with as well - just needs a higher temp & a slight nozzle height increase.

Once you have a design, I'd happily rattle off one in PETG for you to try to save you buying a whole reel & not like it.

Post by: bigpie on January 24, 2019, 21:44:16
I'll give PETG a go, it looks a pretty good material. Some of my prints have been a little too brittle. I'll send you the STL when I've got it finalised. Where do you get your PETG? My PLA has been hit and miss from eBay, diameter is all over the place.
Title: Re: Aux fusebox
Post by: Mr Nick on January 24, 2019, 23:53:11
I just get the PETG from ebay - I go more for the Real brand than a particular seller as I've found it works fine for me. PETG is less susceptible to the dry-out brittleness that I've found with some PLAs - it is basically just plastic bottles.

For PLA I tend to go to a seller by the name of sum2saday as he's reasonably priced and does click & collect from Argos which I can pick up from during lunch at work - saves having to go to the sorting office.

When you're ready, just drop me a pm.

Hello Bigpie, do you have any of your aux fuse boxes available? I’d prefer one of your originals so I can clip it to the one I bought from you last year.

You are welcome to pop round when the builders have finished to have a "poke" around. The garage is in turmoil at the moment and the 'bastard is buried...I'm fairly certain the ASBO creators fit at least 2 switched lives, one under the seat and one in headlamp cowl.

Prototype fusebox installed today. Took the opportunity to tidy up the birds nest which was my original ad hoc wiring.
My only observation so far is that the master fuse hole needs to be slightly wider as the fuse doesn't fit properly. (I overcame this by shaving the edge of the fuse).

Will the original model kit fit onto a new 2018 model vstrom 1000? is the same fitting on the brake light wiring?

I bought one last year and haven't used it but I might keep it because I'll likely upgrade if that's the right word to a 2018 model vstrom 1000 at some stage in the future.
