Does anyone have one of these? Can you please explain how the route planning is done?

I reckon you've not had any replies to this because the question is a bit ambiguous. However, I'm guessing you're not interested in the finer points of what goes on behind the scenes in the device.

I don't have a 220, but am familiar with recent Garmin products. From a user perspective, there are a few settings on the device to let you set shortest/fastest routes and things to avoid like toll roads or motorways. You also have the option to set different profiles so you can have different selections of these settings depending on whether you are on the bike or in the car etc. After that the simplest way to use the device is just to select your destination and dumbly follow the instructions.  BORING..................



Then again, you can be in charge - and this is how I use mine.......

Set the satnav to never recalculate routes. Plan the route using Garmin's Mapsource software on a pc. Settings on the pc to not avoid anything. Set the start and finish points and let the software plan the route. Then modify the route so it travels on the roads you want to be on. Drill down and check very carefully that its exactly as required (the software is rather sensitive to where you drag the route). Then upload onto the device and follow your own route. Lovely.

Thanks Iggy, the self planning routes is what I had meant and that's the exact answer I was looking for :thumb: I'll be ordering a new one from Handtec.co.uk soon if there isn't a response to the post I made in the Wanted section in a while. If anyone knows of a place than has them for a price better than £265 delivery & VAT included, I'd appreciate if you can let me know.

ps. My lovely lady had offered a £100 contribution towards this as she doesn't like getting lost (I made no such guarantees though lol )

Garmin's Mapsource software can be a bitch to use if you you work it out let me know  :shrug:

don't know - I found it much like a lot of software packages, play about with it enough and you get used to its quirks. Then you wonder why you found it difficult.......

I've used Mapsource before, took a few minutes to get the hang of it, but it's not too bad really. There's plenty in the way of possible improvement though, it's a bit 'old style' if you know what I mean :) I guess it does help that I've been using computers since the Sinclair ZX Spectrum was around. Good memories from back then... 48 KILObytes of RAM and you loaded and saved programs with magnetic audio tapes.
