Title: European Travel Insurance
Post by: Fat Rat on July 17, 2010, 20:50:36
I just took out Single Trip Travel Insurance with the AA in readiness for my France jaunt, at £13.00 I was pleasantly surprised   :lala:

Sounds like a good (great) price Andy - how long is the cover for?  When I looked a couple of years ago I am sure it was up around £50 for a 9 day trip.

Probably not "free"
Usually attached to those accounts that you have to pay a premium for?

If not you're lucky :)

Does it include repatriation back to the UK for you AND the bike in the event of an accident ?

I always make sure my European insurance covers repatriation of my bike if it's OK and I'm not. One of my friends got caught out a few years ago with this one and had to pay a fortune to get his bike shipped back from Greece when he had food poisoning (lost nearly two stone in 5 days !).

The insurance that the banks give out 'free' with their accounts doesn't always give cover if you ride a motorcycle. Does yours? If so which bank, please? :)

BTW, this is necromancy, raising an almost 4 year old thread from the dead...

So it is FFS  :violence-smack:

I wondered what the comment about 'mountain stage of the TdF' was all about

Yes. But of course it's not a bank so it doesn't have to give huge bonuses to parasites.....

Nationwide Building Society. Quite a good travel insurance policy (details accessible from here: http://www.nationwide.co.uk/current_acc ... travel.htm (http://www.nationwide.co.uk/current_account/flexaccount/travel.htm)).

Although I have to say that my switch from the Co-op didn't go as smoothly as it should have done.

It says "Hazardous activities   Not included in standard cover", is motorcycling considered a Hazardous activity?

I used this company last year:

http://www.navigatortravel.co.uk/motorcycle-travel-insurance/

Their prices seem quite reasonable given the level of cover you get, and they specifically call out the fact that you are insured to ride a motorbike so there are no grey areas for them to wriggle out of!

Absolutely right.... Never assume that you and your bike are covered. Some provide no cover and some very limited, like riding up to 50 or 125cc bikes only. Check and then get it in writing from them. A friend of mine was told verbally and when he crashed and needed to make a claim from a hospital bed, was told that motorcycling was not covered. Cost him nearly 2000 Euros in medical bills and fares to get home plus loads of aggravation....

Not by them - they just say you need a full licence for > 125 (or maybe 50) and you have to wear a helmet. Not really onerous.

I know this is an old thread but have just spoken to the Building Society that provides my free travel insurance and was really surprised. I don't pay for the account either. Travel by Motorcycle is covered (must wear a Helmet, accident free for 3 years and a full licence for 3 years) For a different trip they include Egypt in the 'Europe' Policy and cover the fact that I take blood pressure medication and have a torn cartilage in my knee for which I'm waiting for an operation at no extra cost! Forgot to check repatriation of the bike if I'm crocked but will do that before the trip in August though. I'm pretty pleased with this!

I am busy planning my own single trip insurance and have found this site

http://www.holidaysafe.co.uk/travel-ins ... cks.html#M (http://www.holidaysafe.co.uk/travel-insurance/activity-packs.html#M)

Option 1 from the link above covers motorbike trips and my quote is for a 7 days.

Does this look reasonable to you? I think the Standard Single Trip option covers what I need.

For the extra £3.20 you won't have to pay out £100 excess on just about everything you might make a claim on! Let's hope a claim's not required but I'd take out the premier plus............belts and braces!!
