One option I’d add is when at home, consider a investing in a Baby Monitor..
They’re pretty cheap, connect to your Wi-Fi and offer not only alarms, but sound and video.
Place one suitably in your garage, with the receiver next to your bed, then you can either call the Plod without getting out of your PJ’s, or call your pals and invite them to a ‘welcome party’ for the visitors..
