Title: Oopse!
Post by: Rookie on July 04, 2025, 12:53:09
I'd just like to remind everyone that it's a blanket speed limit of 40 mph across Dartmoor.

Oh dear, but a timely reminder since we'll be there next week and I've never been before. Thanks for the heads up, I'll crawl appropriately.

I'm guessing it's an unrealistic 40 mph speed limit set by overzealous officials. Although it's difficult to clarify that from the evidence provided. But limits are limits whether they're inappropriate or not.
Life's a bitch.

Looks like all roads were fairly recently lowered from national to reduce risk of roadkill (human and animal) from all the wildlife that freely wanders the place.
Fair I guess, I've had a few near misses with Chatsworth estate sheep who are some of the dumbest creatures on God's Green Earth.
A cow would win, even against the Vee 🤣.

40mph would be a safe speed limit for someone who is not such a brilliant rider/driver and doesn't know the road but I use that road a lot and ride a little quicker than the speed limit, 60mph is safe if you know what you are doing. I have never seen a speed camera there but thanks for the heads up, I will have to be very carful in future. I see that the picture was taken on 5/4/2025 but have also noticed that the speed camera van has been very busy lately, they must be having a purge on my regular riding routes.  :groan: ### :bawl:

Thanks again  :thumb:

This might be a ridiculous question but how do the authorities read a rear facing number plate from the front.  I can see how a mobile "unit" does it but static cameras.. Do I need to slow down here and there?

Good Question...the average camera stretch near me had the cameras replaced recently, little yellow ones .
They all point the same way....get cars ..but bikes one way.. nope.
In " theory " on a bike you could go down it one way at any old speed
In practice I think if it was gratuotus or regular they would catch you by identifying marks / helmet / luggage etc further down on other cameras when they do get a look at your plate
But if you where to speed then cut across a field.....

Ho Hum

Hardly a 'safety camera' if it's 488M away...

Looks like it's on a bridge? Just because it's so central across the road.

I believe they also record the plate on camera as the vehicle passes the speed enforcement vehicle. If you can turn off before you get there you may evade a ticket. If you stop and turn around, zap....they've got you.

Dartmoor at this time of year has a very high number of extremely stupid animals, especially near pubs, pull ins and car parks. They can wander into the road at any moment and without warning and are seemingly oblivious to the dangers of a passing motorcycle.

There are also sheep, ponies with foals, Highland cows (great big hairy ones) and other wildlife. They are far more cautious than the walking pole and backpack brigade, but clipping one will still spoil your day something horrible.

Local councils are obliged to submit annually, plans to Government on the actions they are taking to reduce roads deaths and serious injuries. Rather than spend money on road surface renewal, applying white paint and cutting back roadside vegetation they impose lower and lower speed limits. What, to a motorcyclist, is an interesting twisty road, is often too much of a challenge to drivers of todays overly powerful cars who feel the need to stare at their phone more than they do the road ahead.  Speed limits are being lowered on roads with any possible hazzard because people have become too stupid to look at the road ahead and make a sound judgement on what is safe for themselves and other road users.  You only have to follow a few cars that are queued up behind a cyclist or two to see just how stupid /selfish the average car driver is.

Just as a quick update, the camera was parked next to 2 large mini buses in a gravel layby on my side of the road. The mini buses were at the time disgorging teenagers who were going for a yomp , ten tores practice maybe. So it was well hidden in plain sight, it also had a small rear facing camera to collect your number plate as I passed. That particular part of the road does not have wondering animals on it , it's always worth noting the change in scenery when you cross cattle grids. Then you can differentiate between farmed moorland and wild moorland.

Well, if you didn't have that bloody great big cross stapled to the front they wouldn't have spotted you.
