Title: New helmet
Post by: bonne on June 09, 2025, 16:23:24
My Nolan N100-5 is now 5 years old... and some say that helmets should not be more than 5 years old as they loose their original impact strength over time.

Not sure if this is so important, but I also dropped my helmet from standstill, and even though it seems that there is only exterior damage, I am looking for another helmet.

I have had ups and downs with the helmet... but since I also have a Ncom headset, I was planning to buy the 100-6... since this is build on the new ECE-standard and I assumed that of coarse I could just move the headset from 100-5 to -6. But .... of coarse they have made changes, so that the B901LR cannot fit into the 100-6

How I hate these engineers forcing you to change all accessories when a new model is launched.

So my idea is to go for a cheaper setup. Now looking at an MT-helmet together with a Sena SF-something or similar. The helmet seems to be really well build, newest ECE, comfortable and dead cheap.

So with a generic setup, I am more free to change options when I want to. Any inputs?

Can't comment on the helmet but I have a Shoei Neotec 2 and chose the non-integrated comms setup so it could transfer to a different helmet if needed (am sure the Neotec 3 is different though stand to be corrected).
There should be a universal standard for integrated comms designs.

I just recently bought a 100-5 from Helmet City. Why not see if they have any left?
I paid £100 for it.

The drop matters more than the age really. The interior of a helmet is much more fragile than the exterior and even a small weakening of the internal foam could cause it to fractuce and fail in a crash thereby not absorbing the impact as intended. You can get them scanned in the UK for internal damage but it's often not worth it unless it's a very new and very expensive helmet.
The age limit will naturally assume the worst case scenario which will include riding a lot of hours per day in hot weather and the least careful storage. Whilst I'm not wishing to say 'ignore the 5yrs advice', I do believe it's probably a safest bet guideline rather than a hard and fast rule.

As for the new ECE rating being used to justify aggressive outmoding of integrated comms, don't get me started on that, I could rant for hours :)

I'm another who has the  Shoei Neotec 2. I bought it before the 3 came out. It's the best of many helmets I have owned over the years and as it's been superseded by the 3, the 2 should be relatively cheap. As for comms and helmet fitment, they change the fitting to rip us off just like telephones when you change them you often have to spend on other accessories because the old don't fit. It should be illegal and a sentence of death for doing it.

When I bought my  Shoei Neotec 2 I got it from Sportsbikeshop online. It was the cheapest seller and anyway, they price match.  :thumb:

Edit: I've just looked on the Sportsbikeshop and they don't sell the 2 anymore just the 3 but I found this from another well known seller.

99£ for a 100-5 is criminally cheap. I looked, at I could not find my size. Anyway... since I am in the EU, it will be too expensive and complicated to buy from at UK shop.

Neotec II was the one I was looking at, when I bought the 100-5. The 100-5 won. Still... if I go for a Shoei, I will still need a new intercom.

Meanwhile Ncom wrote me; they sell adapters (tada) so that I can use the old headset on the new helmet. Yeah, I agree... why not make a standard for internal intercoms??? And it is not only regarding phones. Even my top box. It has two adapters. An adapter for an adapter.

We are stupid enough to buy it, which is why they can continue doing this. And this is why I plan on going standard.

Is it worth looking for a G Mac helmet? I seem to remember reading that it's an offshoot from Nolan but uses the old designs. You might find that you can get a slightly updated version of what you had.

It really looks like they have been having a close eye on the 100-5 when designing that while being dead cheap. Still I have the same issues like I can't fit my old intercom and it seems to be sold in the UK.
