Title: Carpuride Motorcycle Carplay
Post by: Fat Rat on August 30, 2024, 11:28:18
I was given the opportunity to review the Carpuride W603, a HD touch screen for a motorbike that supports Android Auto and/or Apple Carplay.

The W603 comes with two HD 1080p Cameras for the front and rear of the bike, the unit has the capability to record the video onto an SD card. It includes all of the mounting hardware and a bar mounted set of controls. It connected seamlessly to my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Here is a review of the unit.

For anyone interested, I have attached the brochure which contains an exclusive discount code.

I've recently fitted a Carpuride W702 fitted to my V-Strom.  So, it's a 7" display but without the cameras.  I was worried 7" would be to big, but I think it's a good size.

Works well, I just use it with Android Auto from my phone sitting in my pocket.  I've always said why couldn't we have something similar to what is in my car for the bike, and recently it seems that there is a flood of these devices from the like of Chigee, Interlude, Carpuride and others.  Carpuride pushing their stuff hard on various social media sites presently.  Got mine from Amazon which had £40 voucher applied so cost £179 delivered.

Would be interested to see if the camera versions are any good so will look with interest.

WHAT'S IT FOR?
Looks like a mirroring device for your phone.
Distracted drivers on their phones are bad enough, but bikers? What could possibly go wrong?

Indeed...

It's against the law to use your phone while driving but it's OK for all this gadgetry to distract you ..

It's a Sat Nav at the end of the day, something which has been around on bikes with the likes of TomTom and Garmin for years, but always seem to come with the 'motorcycle' tax as 'it's designed for motorbikes' just pumps the price up.

Android Auto has features built in that stop you punching away at it too often, so to help with being distracted.  Key in the destination, follow instructions and away you go.  Don't find it a distraction, more of an aid in getting somewhere without looking at a list of directions taped to the tank, or pulling over to keep checking the map.  But, yes, for some could see it as a distraction.

So will it work as a standalone, without a phone?

No, it doesn't work as a standalone Sat Nav, it mirrors what you have on your phone. I use Waze which uses Google maps, it's far more precise than a Sat Nav.

I like the fact it comes with the two cameras and has a record function. I wouldn't use any of the telephone functions, other than to stream music.

There are a lot of these devices suddenly appearing on YouTube.

My mate Alan has the Helmet Head channel and he has tested a load of these little screens, all from different manufacturers and all at different prices. He said he recently had two devices to test which were absolutely identical but one was half the price of the other.

If you fancy one of these little screens, have a good look around before you buy.

What sort of data usage do they (the unit) / navigation app’s use? I’m not thinking about UK, but with most mobile companies having their ‘fair data’ policies, keeping an eye on how much data you’re using when abroad is a pain.

I’ve got a Tom Tom but never connect my phone to it.

I picked up a carpuride W603 (no cameras) - it was a doddle to fit even for me. I used the rear cigarette lighter socket to power it, which was fine.

If I had the chance again I absolutely would not buy it again. Slow, laggy and barely visible in any kind of light other than overcast or night. Didn't autoswitch to dark mode.

Perhaps some of the other variants from other manufacturers are better.

YMMV but I would not reccomend.  :yukk:

The device itself doesn't use data, it is essentially an external display for your phone (with limited functionality) so the data is used by your phone. Google maps will let you download areas to your phone for when you've no signal. I ue organic maps, it runs offline - you download the free maps before you set off.

I like my TomTom Rider 550.

It rarely sends me off track….. unless I forget to set it properly.🤭

I can plan my route(s) on my iPad (beer in hand), using the TomTom app, and send them to the unit.
