Title: XT wheel corrosion
Post by: kwackboy on November 30, 2023, 21:34:51
Had a 2019 650 XT in today for a service,  my first inspection revealed this ... only 18k on the clock..

Bad corrosion either side of the valve.  :icon_no:

That's not good. The owner must be gutted.

Can't understand why anyone wants spoke wheels on a road bike,
that looks like a moisture trap in the centre of the wheel.

That IS a poor design.
But they were bright and shiny when new,.......look ........pretty things.

Simple solution, drill a drain hole so the water can escape. Just next to the valve will do.

The wheel has drain holes between the spokes .

Yes they look bad, not that visible on the pic but there is a drain hole in between each spoke but why did Suzuki not copy the GS design of lacing the spokes to the edge. when I had my XT1050 cleaning the spokes drove me mad.

Yes , seems odd Suzuki didn't use BMW's design as others have done and It's mad that manufacturers like Suzuki and Honda scrimp on wheel build quality.

Recently I had a set of spoked wheels built by a specialist and the price difference between normal and stainless spokes was £40 for both wheels so the cost to larger manufacturers to improve quality would be a fraction of that if they mass produced them ...

£40 difference. For 2? Economy of scale would make it virtually undetectable at showroom floor prices. But the bean counters get paid a lot to keep numbers down, they have to save enough yen to justify their own existence.

The new Transalp has stainless spokes ,yet the flagship Africa Twin doesn't.

The Transalp is designed to be used and abused, the Africa Twin has become classed the same as the GS1200's - Starbuck Specials

looking at the build quality I'd take a Tranny over the other options  lol
