Morning All
So the missus got a small nail through her tyre at the weekend. We used a sticky rope/bacon strip kit to plug the hole and then she took it to our local bike tyre fitters to get a proper internal patch done as the tyre has plenty of life left on it.
The fitters have told her that the reamer tool has made the hole too large and damaged some of the bead wires so they can't fit an internal patch and she'll need a new tyre.
Does this seem legit as I had always read that you plug as a temporary fix and then take to a fitter for a proper internal patch to be fitted. Are they just trying to sell her a new tyre or is this feasible?

I suppose it's always possible. Was it his reamer tool or is he blaming you?
I've had a couple of repairs done after I've put a temporary repair in & had no problem, I know others have too.
I'd take it to another repairer & ask the question.

Oh I did the plug so he's blmaing me entirely. It was a bike kit we used and I think I did everything right but it was the first plug I've done to be fair.
She's going to ask around and see if she gets the same opinion before giving up, it's a Pirelli MT-60RS so they only last about 300 feet anyway but worth saving it if she can.

Definitely get a second opinion, I had to repair my rear tyre recently using a liquorice strip kit while in Fort William.
Took it to my local tyre shop when I got home who repaired it no bother. Cost £15 for the repair on a loose wheel.

So she got a second opinion and it turns out I'm an idiot and so is the fitter at the first shop.
It's bloody tubed since it's a spoked wheel (Ducati Scrambler Urban Enduro).
Our plug never had any chance of working as the tube was puntured, Ducati dealer are fitting a new tube and say the plug is fine to leave since a patch isn't needed with a tube. £29 all in although we did take it loose wheel which saved a few quid. Noted for future trips, pack slime instead.
* Removing the rear wheel is biggest bag of "Yes but look how pretty it is" Italian faff I've ever experienced :)

Before they fit a new tube please ask them to put a patch over the loose wires/puncture site as they will puncture the new tube.

It's purely a high days and holidays bike now she has the GS for touring so I think we'll carry some sealant as a get out of jail and go from there.
Lesson learned.

Tyre back with a nice new tube in, interior trimmed and cleaned up but apparently I hadn't broken or damaged any chords, just ragged edges to the rubber.

@Rixington, you had a better result than I did at a dealers. I took my tubed Navigator rear wheel to the Triumph dealer in Conisborough. I took it to a Triumph dealer as I figured Triumph's have tubes, they'll know what they're doing.
They refused, saying they couldn't fit a tube to a motorbike wheel, I pointed out that they had several in the showroom with tubes in, he said they didn't.
I did it myself, I nipped and punctured the new tube, bought another and did it right. To make certain I fitted tubeless CBR 600 wheels.
