After three winter's the subframe is starting to look a little tatty, so I've decided to do something about it. as it happens it only took an hour and a half to strip off.
Now I just need to decide on paint or powder coat.
-
What are you going to do to strip the paint/clean up any rust? Having it blasted by someone?
I've looked into the cost, thinking this winter I may get mine done as every time I touch up a bit, I find some more! Was finding estimates around £50-100 for blasting and powder coating, but that seems a bit low for how much work it is?
-
Good question. There's a powder coating outfit not far from me so I think I'll get a quote from them first.
However I do have a tin of satin black Hammerite on the shelf and the tight arse in me is shouting "get the brush out you lazy git" in fairness it worked well in the pannier racks and far more durable than the paint.

I'm a bit of a newbie to touching up paint properly (only experience I have is touching up very small dings on car paint, that haven't started rusting!). I'm calling it practice on my bike so far, thinking if I do mess it up and it looks a bit cack, if I get it blasted/repainted in Winter then I don't need to worry :P
If you can keep us updated on how much it costs, that'd be appreciated!

I wouldn't contemplate sanding & painting frames or the like any more: the prices I pay for dropping something scruffy off & picking up a shiny version a few days later makes no sense spending the time & effort.
As a guide, this lot cost me £170, including blasting, extending the sidestand, and powder coating.

I've got on the list so far:
- Subframe
- Rider pegs
- Pillion pegs
- Side stand
- Main stand
I'm going to touch it up (as I want to ride the bike!) and then hopefully winter time when I can get the bike in a garage and on a stand, get everything off and painted properly. Can get some major service stuff done then too.

Quote removed
Wow, the prices for that kind of work seem far more reasonable than they used to be.
-
I've got a quote from my local bloke. £60 drop it off Monday collect Thursday.
-
York Powder Coating normally have a minimum charge of £35 for powder coating but let me off with a tenner for the spacers from my Cosmo pannier rack :lala:
-
If the prices are that reasonable here, I'll definitely get the stands done too!
But it'll have to wait for winter, because I'm having far too much fun on my bike :lala:

My subframe is also showing some rust on the inside. I didn’t think about removing the subframe and getting it blasted and dipped. You just don’t, do you..?
It looks fairly simple so your post has inspired me to give it a go when winter comes later this year. Thanks for posting.

I've just dropped of my k2 DL1000 sub frame, headlight-fairing-instrument-bracket, centre stand and side stand off at Ashfield powder coaters (Nottinghamshire)
Was told it would be £70-80 depending on what the sand blaster charged.
7 to 10 days....

My subframe is also showing some rust on the inside.
Go for it, the new finish should last much longer.
-
Got my parts back yesterday evening. Very happy with the results and all for £100.
A shout out for, Bradshaw Metal Coatings LTD. Just South of Chepstow on the A48.

That makes 2 of use collecting stuff!
Picked these up today £75 blasted and powder coated satin black.
Ashfield Powder Coatings in Notts. Would recommend....
