The ABS light on my v strom 650 dl 2012 comes on intermittently. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and can offer any advice on what the cause might be .
-
It will come on until you start moving, but if you mean it comes on while riding, check the clearance of the senders to the sensor disk, and have a clean up on the sensor disk that might just sort your problem.
-
Checked and cleaned the sensors and the only thing that I could see that might be wrong is the rear one is much further away from the sensor disk than the front one .
-
Does it go on/off at rest pawl? or only when moving?
there's a couple of links come up on a google search: https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php?topic=32050.0

Just been to peer at mine in the garage - front and rear look about the same

ABS pickup to reluctor ring gap setting on the L2 onwards model is from 0.25mm to 1.65mm.so quite tolerant on the gap then.
I used to fit magnetic pick ups a lot on new engines when I was at w***.The biggest problem was metallic particles on the MPU head as it has a slight magnetic field when running, and starter rings chuck off all sorts of bits of metal when they are running. So just check the gap, whip out the pick up and make sure the face and reluctor ring are clean, with no bits of metal across the gaps etc.plus make sure the ring hasn’t been damaged/bent etc.

I had the same problem on my 2017 650. The ABS unit was the culprit. You can read my complains here:

I've had the abs light on for over 12 months passed 2 mots OK
Dealer at service said it needs new abs motor at £2000
I said goodbye

I'd remove the system all together if it hasn't worked in two years, you'd have far better brakes.

Not saying that the following extract is the solution to your ABS light complaint, but it may be worth a further look. Extract from the StromTrooper site, https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/2012-dl650al2-abs-not-working-with-c00.433426/, reply #19 "In the course if replacing the battery, a connector that had corroded came apart. The connector is on a wire the goes directly from the positive battery terminal to the ABS valve fuse, which is directly behind the battery in the battery compartment. The corrosion was actually where one side of that connector is crimped to the wire. Pulling on the wires to get the battery out broke whatever was left of that."
