Title: Initial stuttering
Post by: crazyhorse on August 26, 2020, 23:03:36
Hi

My 2012 650 has been showing a symptom over the last month to six weeks, and that is it stutters when cold, but is fine once three bars show on the dash.

It feels like the kill switch is being used very fast, but when warm, it idles at 1300+ revs, is smooth, and with no rattles.

Now, the bike has 104k miles on the clock, and still runs well, when it’s warmed up, so what do you think this problem could indicate?

The bike has been maintained by myself since I bought it at 1310 miles.

Any suggestions would be welcome.

Cheers Crazyhorse

Haven't really any idea apart from the obvious things like plugs etc, dodgy wiring/bad earth somewhere?
have you ever had a valve check done?

At that mileage I'd take a guess and say it's a fueling issue, maybe check the fuel pump or injector bodies.

Just to add, have some  :bow-blue: for that mileage. I thought I was doing well at half that...  :shy:
Hope you get the issue solved  :thumb:

being the problem is becoming obvious when the bike is warm I'd guess most likely a sensor or ignition coil breaking down with the heat. that said it could be anything that's already been mentioned.

I would hazard a guess that the inlet air temperature sensor in the airbox is playing up, or it may just be a corroded terminal from the sensor en-route to the ECU maybe.

Hi

Thanks to you all, for your replies, and I can say the valves were checked by me at 100K miles, and nothing needed changing.

I will be checking the air filter this weekend, and will have a close look at all the connections to this box, and the output of the fuel pump.

Any other suggestions will be gratefully received.

Hi

After spending time changing the air filter this past weekend, I can state that the stuttering has gone.

Whilst I had the air box apart. I cleaned all the connectors attached to the box
and covered them with electrical grease.

Now, if this also helped the situation I do not know, and it cannot be quantified, but over the last three days I have been out on the bike and no stuttering.

I am very happy, and wish to thank all those who responded to my initial post.

Cheers
