Not generally an issue over here afaik. What is the logic that they offer for asking motorcyclists to remove the helmet ?
-
Ride away theft,, Some say you are asking for this response if you stay sat on your bike... it looks like you want to ride off. I sit on my bike to fuel up, by keeping it upright I get another eggcup or two in !!!!
-
They need to give up on this policy, most of the fuel stations near me don't do this anymore but they force learners to pay before they can use the pumps because of teenagers stealing fuel.
These places need to do one of two things, refuse to serve anyone who can't be identified because their face is hidden or stop alienating bikers because they are too scared to offend someone..
-
just to add, I have never been asked to remove my helmet, but I always wear a flip front and I always flip it
-
I've had it a couple of times, once in the only filling station in our village where we used to fill up both cars and use for car MOT's. The Nail had a drinking habit so I would visit this petrol station at least once a week until they refused to let the pump deliver. I was off the 'bike, I looked at the cashier who had already waved a greeting to me as I arrived and she motioned for me to remove my helmet. They were always a couple of pence a litre more expensive than the nearest supermarket, I foolishly thought I was helping a local business.
Idiot.
Consequently we've never used them again for any fuel or MOT's, we now use pay at the pumps at the supermarkets.

Quite funny. Glad he didn't kick off, the staff are only applying company rules. I have stopped using my local garage due to this. No point having a go at the staff on site, they've been told what to say. I asked for the complaints address and wrote to them. Their flimsy reasoning included fear of robbery, riders not hearing tannoy announcements, drive-off theft, possible under age fuel buying and a couple of others. I countered each one in my reply. They never wrote back.
How often are they robbed? And how often are said robbers filling bikes up first? Their fear of robbery is their problem, not mine.
Are deaf motorists banned from filling up on safety grounds? They wouldn't hear the tannoy.
What percentage of drive offs are two wheelers?
How do they age check burka / niqab wearers?
It's all bollox. It was bollox 30 odd years ago when there was an organised boycott of Shell for the same thing.
I just use a different garage now, no drama, no problem.
And I always dismount before filling up.
-
I always sit on my bike to fill up as well to get it brimmed full and if it’s really busy I will move my bike off of the pump to make room for someone else then go in and pay, but on one occasion they thought I’d rode off!!, as for taking your helmet off I have never been asked to remove it, it’s an awkward one regarding the burka :icon_no: :dl_hyperhysteria:
-
I never go back to any Service Station that won't serve me with the helmet on, especially the stupid ones enforcing this at a "pay at pump" when I cannot get the Petrol without having already put my card in the pump.
-
This is a good subject as there should be boycotts of garages in London over this matter.
When I had spots and hair I worked in a major shell garage in Kent for around 18 months as a cashier . Believe me when I say that within a few months doing this job I'd delt with thousands of customers and handled enough cash to spot a fake just by looking at it and I'd learnt to the same with people, Thier body language, Dodgy fill ups and credit cards, you get the picture.
My point being , I don't see why cashiers don't use this skill (they should have it) and use common sense in this very matter .
I've had this happen to me recently in my local garage , admittedly I don't use them often but the cashier who had seen me before asked me to remove my helmet.
I put the pump down and went inside to speak to the cashier still with my crash helmet on and asked her why ? She replied, "we need to check your age". I asked her politely "in your honest opinion look at my bike and look at me do you really think I look under age ..?" . She answered "no of course not" ... I then said "well then , release the pump" , she again asked me to remove my helmet as they also need to see my face just In case I drive off .... :dl_smiley_banghead:
I then walked out and then filled up in another garage.
It's common sense that will keep customers instead of alienating them over a silly rule .

I agree with the sentiment over being identified but isn't there a number plate in view on cctv?
Simple question, should they ask you to look at the cashier and/or the cctv camera before filling up and make everyone show their faces?
I do find the 'English' way of filling up very lacking anyway. Either use the 24/7 pump or make the drivers pass the cashier's cabin like they do here in France. Why do you occupy a pump while others arrive behind and wait and then spend more time walking to the 'shop' to pay? Also you have a wide open exit to petrol stations that car, van and lorry drivers can just drive off towards!!!!
I don't understand..........
Simple is best, I think. :icon_wink:
-
as per above, I'll just have a grumpy old man moment off thread!!!!! As it is now common for you to pay in a shop for petrol I fecking hate people who fill up then leave their car on a pump whilst they go shopping. In fact I was so pissed off a few months back I reached through the car window and took the keys. I then watched as they searched their pockets her handbag, the floor and went back in to the shop to check there. At this point I put the keys on the seat of their car. I got very black looks as I sat there smiling at them.

Slightly off topic, a couple of you have mentioned filling your bike up while sitting on it....WHY? If you spill it and it runs down your crutch....well you deserve it! :dl_soapbox:
Don't take risks, the bike has a stand and if you have to get off to pay then WHY? (again) The bloke in the video had to get off to pay anyway!!
Bloody common sense...........!! :angry-banghead:
-
my bike only has a side stand, so staying on it I can balance the bike upright and properly brim it,, then I lock the fuel cap and get off
-
I always fuel up sat on the bike.
-
I always fill up with tbe bike on the centre stand.
I have a flip up helmet which I always put up when buying petrol. Have still been asked to take my helmet off at two stations. I've never used either since.
-
FR and Tusker, good luck, don't spill any! Not that you get a lot more in anyway but you won't go down to the last few drops before you think about filling up again, would you?
lol lol lol
-
If you spill it and it runs down your crutch....well you deserve it! :dl_soapbox:
Not on a modern bike you won't plus most pumps have a cut off so if you are not paying attention the pump cuts off ..
I also brim my tank sat on my Honda as I don't have a centre stand , where as on my GTR I have one and get off and brim the tank.
-
Sorry, I took this off topic but glad to hear the 'sit-ons' are confident!
-
Joe,, you are right,, but habits die hard
-
I have to rock the boat I'm afraid, I don't mind jumping through the helmet off hoop on fill up, besides, it gives me the opportunity to bless those interested with my Adonis like features, admittedly, were I pug ugly I might find myself in agreement with the rest of you... :icon_wink: :icon_wink: lol
-
Unless I missed something the statement at the end is incorrect (and potentially racially inflammatory). I didn't see any evidence that the garage would serve people with a burka, unless they were on a motorbike, as the narrator stated.
-
Having spoken to and listened carefully to several forecort staff, I can say that where I live it is only two wheelers who are being asked to show their faces. This seems to indicate that either they think we are less trustworthy than other motorists or they are too afraid of being hit with a racial or religious discrimination claim to ask anyone else. If this particular garage states "no helmets" he has complied and should be allowed to fill up. I recognise some will use this type of stunt to stir tension, but there is definitely a case to be made about anti biker discrimination.
-
Absolutely, they are not frightened of discrimination claims from bikers, to ban the Burka would induce serious racial disc claims, simples, and so though desirable to the garage it would be unenforcible in reality.
Any scrote or thief can wear a Burka and pretend it is for religious purpose, where in fact it is to hide identity, same as they can a helmet.
Not being racist, just saying the truth.

129 a litre! It's only 122 at my local Tesco.
-
lol Hats off to Tesco!
-
lol lol
Maybe we need a price cap.....
-
It's 129p if you keep your helmet on and 122p if you take it off.
-
In that case I'll have ten litres of unlidded.

I use a flip front helmet and open it at fuel stations and have never been asked to take it off.
However I led a group of 14 on a ride out into a garage recently and we were all allowed to fill up but once in the shop the clerk asked the two riders with fixed helmets to remove them before paying!
Both obviously, despite their lids, middle aged ladies didn’t take them off and were allowed to pay but everyone in the queue thought it strange.
-
In that case I'll have ten litres of unlidded.
