Title: GT85 Spray
Post by: Grievesy on April 16, 2016, 11:33:55
Anyone know where I can find GT85 spray on the cheap? This stuff is my staple for my bike maintenance. Normally can be found around £2.50 a can. But I once found it for £1 per can once, needless to say I stocked up on the stuff but my supplies have ran out. That and the fact I've moved 75 miles from my other house I am struggling to even find it here (Dumfries) unless I order online.

ALDI. £1 a can last time I loaded my basket ma mate but they don't sell them all the time. I just picked up cans of WD40 chain cleaner/ wax for £1 a can as well, they are £5-8 anywhere else.

I use WD40 for almost everything from cleaning and lubrication to polishing! (brings out the black plastics really well)

Keep seeing this stuff on the cheap in the pound shops etc is it as good as WD40? if so I might try it..haha

Afraid I'm no use as to where to acquire it on the cheap though near you! have you tried the usual Pound(world/land/stretcher) B&M bargains, small hardware stores etc??

Asda own brand "maintenance spray" 400ml cab for £1.25. I buy it by the basket load. Smells the same as WD40, so must be the same

On a different forum.... an experiment was undertaken.

Steel wool was pulled into pads and nailed to a shed door

One was not treated, one sprayed with WD40 and one sprayed with ACF 50

After a two months the piece sprayed with WD40 was slightly discoloured with the rust. The one with ACF 50 was moderately rusty and the one left bare had almost rotted away.

I don't want to teach my Granny how to suck eggs here and I apologise if I am stating the obvious but WD40 is not the same as GT85. WD is mainly a water disperser (hence WD). GT85 is a lubricant with a bit of Teflon in it to make it cling. Don't laugh but I nick our lasses olive oil to clean up the black plastic and rubber on the bike....works a treat!

I bet on a hot day if you close your eyes you could almost imagine being in the Italian countryside, the smell of the oil wafting around!  Would probably take more than that to get Oldham out of my mind though!
I've just done a bit of cleaning with WD40, might do one side with oil one with WD40 next time and see how it works though to be honest! :thumb:
