The Moaning Old Git Thread (http://www.v-strom.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=13838) is one of my favourites on this illustrious site. And I know exactly where you aging sociopaths are all coming from...
But every once in a while, something wonderful is salvaged from the mire of crapulence that is an Old Git's Lot these days.
If against all the odds, the gods shine briefly for you, please share here, so we can moan about your good fortune on That Other Thread (http://www.v-strom.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=13838)...
I'll kick off, and being a northerner, mine's not surprisingly about money. M and S insurance offered to beat my renewal quote by £50. It's the usual advertising spiel I generally bin. But my brainwave was that my old MGB was due to have its renewal, which is cheap anyhow as I'm (ahem) 'mature'.
Cost after to insure fully comp with protected NCB... £16! :auto-dirtbike:
Lots of money left over to pay for rust inhibitor treatment and so on, yay!

Anytime I'm out on my VStrom, its not the newest and certainly not the shiniest (read cleanest) but always puts a smile on my face. Background, suffered depression quite badly last year and could only see the darkness ion everything. My younger brother called me one night to say that he'd bought a project bike an old G Reg S10. Spent the summer rebuilding and getting ready for my test. That was PITA couldn't beleive all the hoops that have to be jumped through. Anyway did my cbt did the theory, mod 1 then mod 2 on one of the wettest days of year in October last year and started riding the S10. Between Christmas and New Year get another call from my brother ( we do talk more often than this implies) who had spotted a Vstrom wiht lots of kit going for a very reasonable amount. Funds were tight due to Christmas and the fact that whilst I was off work with depression 9 weeks no pay other than ssp, so I had to decline. Anyway he shows up a couple of hours later with the Strom. :welcome: and says just pay him back when I can. What can I say, overwhelmed was an understatement :bawl: . The joy I get every time I get on the strom is only magnified knowing what he has done for me. :auto-dirtbike:
Sorry to go on a bit but couldn't find words to cut it down any more

Wish I had a brother like that. I'd stay friends with a brother like that.
Sometimes I wish I had a brother.
My sisters alright though.
-
Top brother you have there Big, can I call you Big?
Tonight, while still at work, in a train station car park I found a £20 note. That cheered me right up.
-
This afternoon, while not at work, in my kitchen, I found beer. Similar effect.
-
Jacko, the £20 note is mine, I dropped it this morning .
-
The Mrs walking without sticks less than 2 weeks after getting a new right knee :)
Top end titanium jobbie too, a lot to be said for Private Healthcare.
-
Jacko, the £20 note is mine, I dropped it this morning .
Thanks mate, you're a star.
-
My 2 year old boy fills me with joy every day, but getting a good payrise t'other day was also joyous.
-
My very recently turned 18 year old Daughter just took me to the pub and bought me this (with her own money)
Then after a quick downing and just 10 minutes later, she bought me this (still with her own money)
I'm more than filled with normal joy, I've waited years for that pint.
Thanks Babe xxx
-
I'd get that pic framed Martin.
-
Yep, a moment to treasure.
All those years of upbringing have not been wasted.
-
Definitely not if you managed to teach her to take you to the pub and buy you beer!
-
Hope they went down well mate, looking forward to when my boys old enough to get the beers in for me!
-
It's cheaper not to have children and just buying your own beer :neen:
-
I get a real kick out of my kids buying for me, even though I almost always have to give them the cash first.
-
Me and bro in law accidentally got sent too many tickets for BSB. Got them through Groupon or some such thing. Just did Brands Hatch. Wife says technically its stealing. I say technically I'm off to Oulton Park in 2 weeks time :)
-
You gave them an amount of money (in advance) and they sent you an amount of tickets afterwards. That's just a business arrangement. No problems there.
-
just become a grandad to a healthy boy at 8 pounds 11 ozs time for a few sherbets tonight boy I feel old now :occasion-balloons: :occasion-balloons: :occasion-balloons: :occasion-balloons: :occasion-balloons:

-
Congratulations Phil - it must feel brilliant, though! :occasion-balloons: :occasion-balloons: :obscene-drinkingcheers:
-
Congrats and well done! (Not that you did much)
-
I was very excited to become an uncle on Wednesday, but very worried this evening as my 2 day old niece has now had to go into surgery for a diaphragmatic hernia. Will hear later this evening how she's doing....
-
Good luck to her and you all
-
Well that was quicker than expected! Within a few minutes of posting that message I got a call from my sister telling me that everything has gone smoothly and she's doing better than expected :occasion-balloons:
(To clarify, better than expected means there was a high risk of reduced lung capacity or respiratory problems, but she has none of this and is now perfectly healthy :) )

My daughter lost the sight in her left eye 5 weeks ago, the joy came as the optic nerve healed and her eyesight returned. MS can be so cruel. On a lighter note, the joy of finding, and following, instructions on line for how to adjust a cupboard door hinge so that it no longer fouled on the door below. On a wholly bumble brag moment, my wife's joy at being able to swimming our pool - it only took 8 weeks to replace broken parts and clean up consequent filth, to enjoy clear, clean water.
I must remember these when I wake up my usual curmudgeonly self.
-
My Niece is going to make my youngest brother a grandad at 45 !! pleased as punch both by the baby to come and the piss taking I'm going to do with my brother
-
thanks for all the good wishes I will have to start saving up for new crash helmet and leathers for him
-
hope everything OK jrs81
-
chris and jrs81 hope everyone has a speedy recovery

The thing that has filled me with joy is..... my bike. While I have been riding for 34 odd years, the last 7 or so have been somewhat joyless, for a variety of reasons. I'd pretty much stopped just 'going for a blast' and the bike had become transport from a to b. One of the reasons was down to the bikes I was riding - an enormously dull Honda Deauville 650 and 2 BMW K11LT's (which weren't particularly dull just bloody expensive to run). Several episodes of serious depression didn't help either.
Following getting my Vee (if that's the correct term for the thou') I have noticed my grin coming back. Today I had to go out to the pet shop. Normally it's a straight there and back, about two and half miles. Fifty five miles later, I got home, silly grin plastered all over me face and feeling great. I would have done more but I was taking the other half out for Sunday lunch to celebrate her new job. Tomorrow, though, it's going to be a full tank and follow my nose.
I think I've got my mojo back. YIPPEE! :lala:

My dogs 'Che' and 'Muddy', Alaskan Malamutes, which we've had since pups about 9 years ago. They always made us smile when things might not be going too well, they always had time for me especially at breakfast and supper times, they'd 'speak' in their own dog language and we loved them to bits. Late on Saturday night Che wasn't his usual crazy self and was whimpering with pain. A late night visit to the vet and surgery found an untreatable tumour at his pancreas and about 1.00 am I was with him when he was put to sleep. Later that morning he was buried in the garden. Myself, my wife and Muddy have been grieving since the loss and it's sometimes that horrific loss which makes us appreciate the relatively normal activities that fill our lives with joy. Che was a character and loving and loyal to the end. He's more than sadly missed.
-
Sad news DOG. Treasure the memories.
-
So sorry for you. I've lost dogs over the years and the pain is still as keen each time.

My Little Girl passed her driving test today :) I'm a proud Dad.

Can Dad's taxi retire now?
-
Or has dad relinquished his car?
-
Dad's taxi will always be there. That's kind of the rules.
Dad's car might be a touch too expensive to insure :)

Not if dad is paying for it :neen:

I checked - between £5K and £8K to do that :)

Eeeek
Incidentaly my Merc's (ML250 AMG Sport) a year old soon and it's going to cost a piffling £280 to insure fully comp' including business use, which is nice.
-
I just got an email from Amazon saying I am due a refund .... £0.01
Any ideas what to do with it ? (Other than spend a penny!)
-
I just got an email from Amazon saying I am due a refund .... £0.01
The bad news is that they'll pay it back in installments! lol
-
Taxman just gave me some of my hard-earned back! :obscene-drinkingchug:
The joys of being self-employed! :auto-dirtbike:
-
Tax man is doing the opposite to me at the end of the month. :angry-tappingfoot:
-
finding the bank card of of the c**t that tried to steal my bike - mixed feelings to be honest :violence-smack:
-
Are you sure the card belongs to said c**t? It's not stolen?
-
that was my 1st thought, but the police looked at the name and said that that wasn't the case. I said ohhh is he well known to you then? and their answer was I have no words!
-
I was going to recommend that you do the honest thing and return it. Simply tie the card to a house brick and pop round to his place. 4 am is usually a good time to do it.
Hypothetically speaking, of course...
-
Do TP's plan, but return it to his face?
-
I should have ordered the replacement parts first but was too honest and gave it to the police  :groan:
-
Student Finance England finally agreeing that my divorce certificate is proof that I am not married (don't ask) and the subsequent cash payments rescuing me from penury.
Also received a cheque from the DVLA for £30, no idea why, there was no letter with it.

Remaining road tax on the bike? Either that or some bored employee has had a "Feck it" day and fired off a load of cheques to random people!
-
Just finished watching all 62 episodes of 'Breaking Bad' over a 6 week period. Brilliant television, really enjoyed it, but squirmed a lot - sometimes it was difficult watching (no, not the old hemorrhoids this time).
-
You've got to much spare time Gassoon :)

Ah, that could be it - I assumed I'd lost out.

I just bought a 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek Limited with Eyesight. It's an XV SE in the UK. It is only available with an engine that runs on regular grade petrol in the USA. It's the first time I ever bought a top of the model line car. The Eyesight system is really something.

I wish :) trouble is I was watching them from about 11-30 pm into the wee hours! Had to kip in the 'huffy bed' a couple of times...
Greywolf - you know the gubberment can remotely take over control of that system whenever they want? :stirpot:
-
Limited with Eyesight.
Sounds like most of the drivers on Britain's roads.
-
Their eye sight is usually fine, it's just that they are using it to text/tweet/Facebook/email/angry birds. I've seen a kindle in use too at 50ish mph.
-
Just for fun, I came home from going to dinner in Wisconsin entirely on the adaptive cruise control. I set it for the speed limit in each area when it changed. It will follow any vehicle ahead with the two second gap I set it for if said vehicle went below the speed limit or go back to the setting if I moved to an open lane. In city traffic it even stops and holds position if the vehicle in front stops. If I stop, I just have to move the switch to Resume when the front is clear to get moving again. I can't see doing that again, but it was fun to see it work.
It's going to take a while to get used to all the bells and whistles on the navigation/infotainment/back up camera unit. It will probably take at least as long as getting used to the word "infotainment". I'm shocked the computer didn't mark that as a misspelled word.
-
Edutainment doesn't get c
corrected either...

I've been playing baseball now for 20 years, first for Bournemouth and then for Guildford. Following my unplanned dismount last year, I decided to retire. There's a tradition in American sports of taking a player's number out of circulation when a popular/good player retires so that nobody else will use it.
My team honoured me with this at the end of season do last year, and then they went and did this:

Great to earn such recognition! Way to go, Hevra! :)
-
What a fantastic gesture and a huge mark of respect for you.
Well done
-
Jackie Robinson's 42 was the only number retired by all major league clubs. You're exactly twice his number.
That's quite an Honour to accompany hanging up the tools of ignorance. (Look it up. Not a bad thing) Not a bad way to go out though probably a bit premature for your liking.

:occasion-balloons:  and repeat many times.
Well Done :)
-
Nice! What a lovely write up. Well done you.
-
Now, that really is something to lift your spirits Snow!
Well done......
-
I was going to laud my new hjc lid obtained at half price but there are far more better stories here so I will sit this one out
-
If it works for you obalanga, then I'm happy for you! :)
-
Only a players peers can appreciate their true value.
-
Filled up with petrol for under £1 a litre. Much joy.
:lala:
Get to the pay booth to find (not unusually) that the price for my tank is 1p higher than it says on the pump. This is something I always find to be annoying.
:icon_batterup:

Hello Snow
I know diddly squat about baseball but I do know you don't get that sort of recognition lightly.
Well done indeed. :text-bravo:
-
Hello Snow
I know diddly squat about baseball...:
Think about the rockets you had as a kid. Imagine what the Yanks did to rockets. Now imagine they did the same to rounders while spending all day drinking beer.
Well done Snow :thumb:

Can't believe I missed this from last Feb, Hev! Belated congratulations to you!
A great honour! Players' player :text-bravo:

My youngest is turning out to be a demon footballer, and plays for a team in the age group above, more than holding his own. This season he's hit a run of scoring that puts a certain Mr Vardy to shame.
He's cool as a cucumber and celebrating his goals in a dignified low-key way. Unlike his Dad whose jumping with joy like a loon on the touchline! Proud dad. :)
-
cucumber?WTF?
-
The word cucumber isn't the problem, it's the substitution of a banned Americanism by the word "great" that made that funny.
lol
-
Did someone say cucumber?

Pensioner boredom eh? I was looking through a bike mag and my eye caught an ad. for a 1960 BSA Goldie 500 at only £145.
However the mag was October 1966 Motorcycle Sport.
I never imagined that I'd still be reading that after 49 years.
Good read though all the same.
TT race results ( Hailwood Ago etc. and a nice article on Bill Lomas and racing Moto Guzzi's)
-
Tax return time.
The tax man looks like he's going to let me have some of my own money back.
Sorry if the NHS goes a bit short due to this...
(Perhaps Google could chip in a bit more to make up the shortfall? )

Got my new (imported) Vespa registered by DVLA (at the 4th or 5th attempt!) :thumb:

My son went to fix Bills computer some years ago. When Bill found out I was into bikes,he signed one of his pictures and asked my son to pass it on to me.Nice bloke I thought.
